HiJackThis Log
I am having two issues which I am hoping that you might be able to help me solve.
To set the tone---I operate with XP and have a habit of keeping current with updates. In addition, I use NAV, AdAwareSE, Spybot, Spyblaster, Registry Mechanic, and the XP System Tools to keep my comp. fairly current . In addition, I am connected to the internet via a wireless receiver to a modem and my ISP is Verizon DSL.
The first issue--is that upon booting the comp I consistantly receive a warning cloud in the icon tray to the effect that NAV Internet Security is not auto-enabled. As directed, I click the cloud to get to the NAV warning box and within about 5-8 seconds the CPU makes a mechanincal noise and the warning box changes to auto-enabling ON. On more than one ocassion I have visited the NAV application only to discover that the auto-enabling appears to in fact be ON. This is troubling since I am concerned about those few seconds when it strikes me that I could be infection vulnerble.
The Second Issue--this brings me to my second problem and that is that recently I have had to restart my computer upon my first boot since I am not able to connect initially. After restart the connection seems to happen just fine. When this has happened, I have checked with the other comp on the wireless and all are working fine.
In the interest of solving this problem, I am pasting a copy of a HiJackThis Log for your review. I hope you can make something out since both issues seem to related to something I cannot figure out on my own.

Hi,
Hmmm, This could be a software/hardware problem or maybe not.
What I need you to do is this and it will take at least a couple of hours to do these scans.
Do each one of them please and post the logs from the Ewido, Panda and BitDefender scans and a new HJT log.
Even if it takes two posts on your part to do it please do it.
Make sure you can see hidden files.
In Windows XP
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
After you're cleaned, please "rehide" them again.
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
3. From the main ewido screen, click on UPDATE in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run.
5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.
Make sure you are set to normal startup. Click Start -> Run -> Type Msconfig -> Press Enter -> make sure Startup is set to Normal.
Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
And also:
Lets see what some virus scans can uncover and we will go from there.
Get the stinger here:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Download it to another computer if need be, and bring it to the affected computer on floppy disk.
It will kill the top 53 virus files if any are found there
then,
Internet Explorer required
Run these two online virus scanners (Panda Activescan) following these instructions below:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/product..._principal.htm
Internet Explorer required
Also this excellent(BitDefender) scanner:http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
These scans will take more than an hour to complete, so make sure you have time to let them run thru. Save the Panda scan log and the BitDefender log and post them back here please with a new Hijackthis log.
Thanks.
Review:
I need:
Panda scan log
Bitdefender scan log
Ewido Trojan scanner log
A new Hijackthis log please.

Neal:
I have followed your instructions. What follows are scans per your instructions with the exception of the Panda Scan. The report read and displayed no intrusions which it could ID. I tryed to copy it but without success.

HI,
If you have the free version of weatherBug look for it in add/remove program and remove if there, it is loaded with spyware.
Then look for this folder and delete it if there:
C;\Program files\AWS < folder
Download CCleaner from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
or here:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html
Install and run it. The windows tab should be opened in the upper left of the program. Click analyze and then click run cleaner. Just use the windows tab that is up front by default.
1.Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
2.If you are running Firefox: ,then click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".
When done post a new HJT log please.
How is your computer running now?
-
Neal:
The two issues which I described in my initial email are visibly unchanged. I did not find weatherbug in my control panel install/remove device. However, I did find AWS in program files and following your instructions I deleted it from the folder.
Since we last talked I did run Stinger with no apparent problems Dx and CCcleaner with several MB id'd and removed.
Pursuant to your advice I am including another HJT log.....

Ok let's review.
Panda was clean
Ewido got everything it found except one and BitDefender got it and others.
Your HJT log is clean
Maybe you should be looking in another direction now.
Maybe a hardware/software problem.
Wireless problem.
Let's do one more scan it is called Mwave it will take a long time to do and will not remove anything but if it finds something it will give you the file path so you can manually
go and delete it yourself.
MWave Link: Post the log it makes
Please download the free MWAV antivirus tool from here:
ftp://ftp.microworldsystems.com/download/tools/mwav.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it. Follow the prompts to scan your system for viruses. Then please post for me the log of infected files from the BOTTOM panel of the scan window.
To copy the log into this thread highlight the BOTTOM panel entires found by MWAV and then press CTRL-C to copy them. To insert it into the thread press CTRL-V.
-
Neal:
I did the MWAV scan and have copied/pasted in this post. It reviewed 25K objects and was very quick. Now I cannot post to this reply due to large size. Did I do something different than what you had requested?
-
Neal:
I did this a second time and here is what I've found:
Wed Sep 14 12:11:17 2005 => ************************************************** ********
Wed Sep 14 12:11:17 2005 => MicroWorld Anti Virus & Spyware Toolkit Utility.

Do you still have the original mwav log?
You could split it up and make two posts with results or three if needed.
To copy the log into this thread highlight the BOTTOM panel entires found by MWAV and then press CTRL-C to copy them. To insert it into the thread press CTRL-V.
Maybe it found nothing, can't tell with out log.
