    XP very slow

PC crawling along half the time ! - Running out of ideas to try and fix it.

4 anti-spyware SW tools (SpyBot, Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster and AdAware) running - nothing showing on scans run today. Could running 4 tools be part of the prb ?

Sygate firewall, seems to be working OK.

AVG anti-virus, scan came back clean today.

PC runs very slowly about 50% of the time. Otherwise, it works OK. Seems to happen even when internet is not connected (unplugged), although usually when it is (cable modem, so 'always on')

    HJT log attached...any ideas ?

    HELP !!

    Hi and welcome,

I came over from another forum to help out some.

do you know what this is:

    O8 - Extra context menu item: Write a Review... - http://client.alexa.com/holiday/scr...ions/review.htm

that alexa part is troublesome possible spyware related.

    Let's try this:

    Download CCleaner from here:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
    or here:
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html

Install and run it. The windows tab should be opened in the upper left of the program. Click analyze and then click run cleaner. Just use the windows tab that is up front by default.

    1.Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".

2.If you are running Firefox: ,then click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".

This tool will clean out some junk that could be slowing you down.

Let us know how it goes.

    Thanks Neal
Didn't mention in my initial post (sorry, probably should have) but I already run (usually daily) CCleaner.

How should I go about deleting that 'Alexa-like' registry entry ?

Is there any point pursuing any of these tools to check to actual speed of my cable connection....it would be good to eliminate that as a possible source of slowdown. Even though my PC does occasionally run slower when not connected to the internet...the real problems are when it is hooked up.

    HI,

If you want to get rid of that entry do the following.

Scan with HJT again and put a check next to this item, making sure all browser windows are closed includeing this one. Now put a check next to this:

    O8 - Extra context menu item: Write a Review... - http://client.alexa.com/holiday/scr...ions/review.htm

Again make sure all browser windows are closed and click FIX

That should take care of that.

Could you please confirm what the spec of your PC is (e.g. Pentium 4 1.8GHz, 256Mb RAM, etc), how much free hard disk space you have on the C: drive and how much memory your PC is using during normal use (you can see this by pressing [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete] and going to Task Manager).

As we pile more and more software and Windows updates onto our PCs, they naturally slow down, though sometimes more dramatically than we would expect. The lower spec systems with slower processors, less RAM or full up hard disks will be affected more quickly.

Has the performance been gradually getting worse or has it just started going slow all of a sudden? Perhaps after you installed some new hardware (e.g. printer/scanner) or some new software?

Hi DJ...thanks for trying to help

Dell Dimension 2400...Celeron 2.4Ghz CPU, 128Mb RAM, 37Gb total disk, 24Gb free. Performance has degraded slowly, can't tie it to any particular HW or SW install.

Avg memory util is tougher....I use the Task Mgr regularly, to shut down "unresponsive" apps when my PC is in crawl mode, and I always look for any likely culprits in the list of active processes.

Just did it right now (with my PC running at about 5 on a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of slowness/fastness).....total memory in use about 40-50mb, iexplore the largest at 15mb.

Nothing ever seems to stand out on that list when I see it...biggest number is always the "99%" agaimst 'System Idle' which alway confuses the hell out of me !!! what's all that about ??

Thanks again for jumping in to try and help
    Steve

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
On the face of it, your system ought to be more than capable of running Windows XP, although 128Mb RAM isn't much for it to run lots of applications at the same time.

When you quoted the 40-50Mb figure, was that by adding up the running applications on the Processes tab? If you look on the Performance tab of Task Manager, that will tell you what the whole system is using overall, which is a better figure to work with.

The 'system idle' process running at 99% is completely normal. It's a useless bit of information, I agree, but it's always been like that!!
