    Re: Windows 2000 restarts continuously

Are you using a full version 2K disk or an HP disk?

I tried looking up the Pavilion 7500 & it returns too many replies.

There must be 7501? or 7500xyz?

If you have a full version disk then this is moot but if your disk is an HP disk we need to know the exact model.

Or post the options that you see.

Not knowing the source it's hard to know the options.

    didn't work.

finally system and I were down to two options - format and leave the file system unchanged. So, presumably, now I have two copies of win2k on my system, and at least one should work (if it was system error) but still no luck. Now it doesn't even gets to the "windows 200 professional" start up screen... It hangs up before that, doing nothing, complaining about nothing... It was suggested to me to clean all of the possible connections inside the box - videocard, memory sticks, - everything I'd be able to do without breaking it apart. Because it seemed as if system asks some process to respond and waits for an answer forever...

So I am back to square one with the problem, but now I pretty sure it was not worm, and I'm 75 percent sure it was not the hard drive.

But i may be wrong on both counts

sorry, I got the model wrong. it is HP Pavillion 7850

I have the full win2k disk.

I have already went trough these options, actually, my "not knowing"="freaked out and scared". Because options seemd hard to choose from, but really i had to NOT choose the formatting and full and deep new install, 'cause i need to save my documents...

You can try Safe Mode again.

If the Repair Option does not work you can put this drive on another computer as a slave to extract data then return & do a Clean Install.

In the rare event that this is a BIOS problem then:

    Reloading the BIOS default settings

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...ph07110#N10018

If this is a hardware issue then the dismantling is the troubleshooting.

In my opinion if you can access the hard drive to even try an install then the hardware & BIOS are probably fine.

So if you have data you want then extract it on another computer then do a full clean install would be my suggestion.

& in the future backup important data to disks or secondary drives.

the problem is that all this articles assume that since i have this model number I run and want to run WinME. But I'm not
And win2k doesn't have system retsore build in, unless you backup your registry every now and then to "recover" if problem occurs.

more info: when it hangs up starting up windows (black screen, row of withe rectungles, words - starting up windows above it and "for troubleshooting.......bla-bla-bla - below)
computer has the lights on the keyboard, reacts on CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK, complains with awful high pitch sound when i type something on the keyboard... It is totally busy waiting for something to respond before proceedeing with start up. What is it waiting for?????

do you know in what order things (driverts, processes) are loaded at startup??? May be then I would be able to figure out faulty part.

ps. off topic - sorry for my mistypes and mistakes... ops:

I would suggest first trying to reset the BIOS settings as seen here:

Scroll to: Reloading the BIOS default settings

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...ph07110#N10018

If that does not help then:

    Updating the BIOS

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...name=c00007682

If that doesn't help then get your data off the drive on another computer & do a clean install of 2k.

If that doesn't work then hardware checks are definitly in order.

thanks everyone for the help, your input was very much appreciated.

the HD is dead, i'll try to retrieve the data...
second hd is somewhat sick - some files appear to be 0 K....

so we got it running on small third hd and now i'm moving data from one place to another and burn cd's....

does anyone knows if i need to consider buying UPS unit and what characteristics are most important...?

Thanks for the thanks & glad to hear you at least know what's happening.

Here is just a couple of basic google searches on UPS:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=UPS%20unit

    http://groups.google.com/groups?q=UP...r=&sa=N&tab=wg

If you want more input from D-A-L hardware experts it would be a good idea to start a new thread in the hardware section.
