Hi guys.

I am new to these forums and am amazed at how helpful people seem to be to those with problems.

Here is my problem:

My laptop wouldn't shut down when I clicked start>shut down etc - I had to keep the power button down in order to shut down.

So I decided to try and get some help.

I was advised by someone to run this programme: Cleanup40.exe

I did exactly as they said but then when I came to reboot my laptop thats when things went a little strange.

The start bar normally at the bottom of my screen has completely gone.

When I go into My Computer everything looks messed up - all the icons are all over the place - every window I open is the same - all messed up.

I can use the net fine (as Im typing this) but no other windows can be brought up.

All my desktop icons have a kind of haze around them.

I have no START key on the bottom left of the screen - I cant shut down or restart.

Anything ending .exe does not work. All that comes up is an error message saying: The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

When I run HJT I have to save the log onto a CD and transfer it onto another laptop to post it as my laptop wont open .exe

it sounds like its the prog u mentioned that caused the damage, i would advise doing a system restore if at all possible.

you start could be dragged to bottom of screen where you cant see it...try pulling it up by hovering mouse at very bottom, left clicking and dragging up.

as for my comp messy...go to view, arrange by...or view display

as for the haze, it could potentially be incorrect reolution settings, try changing them

if you have nothing of great value on the hdd, you could format it.

another option is to insert in another laptop (see if its laptop or hdd faulty) or to buy laptop ide to desktop ide adaptop and attach to a desktop pc (either alongside another hdd or by itself)

give one or two a try, get back to me soon with an update
