    Mcafee superdat problems

    Hi all,
For the last year I have been using Mcafee Internet security boxed product for my computer and I've been virus/adware/spyware free for a year. Recently my dat auto update subscription ran out so I thought instead that I would use the free superdat service, I downloaded the most recent one and tried to run it but during the program running got this error "There is error occured, while reading the file" So I stopped Mcafee stopped all Mcafee processes and tried again. Same error. So I decided to update manually by extracting the DAT files into my virus scan folder, this went ok and when checking Mcafee reported it was up to date! Great, I'll update like this I thought and started a scan. Mcafee then crashed when scanning a file. A .cab file. I thought something I did was wrong so I reinstalled Mcafee and tried the superdat file. This time it said I didn't have a compatible product. I know I downloaded the right file. So I tried the manual method but it crashed again, so now I only have the original Mcafee Internet Security 6 with no new DAT and I'm worried. Any reason why the superdat is acting wierd? Mcafee still crashes on a reference.cab file, when it worked flawlessly until now, I feel as if Mcafee are bullying me into buying a new years subscription. Help me please!!!

    Thank you Steve

    Hello,hersnab & Welcome

Hmm not sure on this one but see if downloading the file
from this site is any help
    http://download.mcafee.com/updates/superdat.asp

& for that file see if this helps to delete it try this first
before going for the Superdat file

Make sure you can view hidden and system files: Instructions here

Then Boot to safe mode: Instructions here

    & do this here

    Clean out temporary files:

    * Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK

    * Let it scan your system for files to remove.

    * Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.

    * Click "OK" to remove them.

    * Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.

Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.

& you should also post a HijackThis logfile

    Hi,hersnab

Well the only item i see out of place here is this one
but glad to say no more then this.

Hold on do you use a webcam if so this maybe a driver for it
if no fix it if you do have a webcam don't fix

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:
    vsnpt513.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SNPT513] C:\WINDOWS\vsnpt513.exe

Make sure you can view hidden and system files: Instructions here

Then Boot to safe mode: Instructions here

Delete the following files\folders IF still present:
    C:\WINDOWS\vsnpt513.exe<---This file

Then do a reboot see how it is

Thanks for all your responses and time HJThis,
That entry is my cheapo webcam, hmm... I've been looking around Google and the like for anyone who has had similar errors but when I put a search in something along the lines of 'Mcafee superdat error occured' not one match is returned I don't understand, I payed for the boxed product and it is the best I've used. AVG still let virus' and the like in on my computer and having the one pruduct which controls the firewall, privacy, virus is very handy. If the updates are available for free why should I feel I have to pay £35 a year for them. Also I still cant peform a full system scan. It sticks on a -....reference.cab file. I cant help but think this is Mcafee trying to get more money out of me as I only started having problems the minute my subscription ran out. I used to peform weekly virus scans which completed and it would rarely find anything, Mcafee used to delete anything nasty the minute it appeared. As I said before I reinstalled so 'rolled back' my virus definitions and engine, privacy and firewall updates. When I try to manually install the DAT files when I restart Mcafee it tells me it has unknown definitions and build and crashes. I feel it's only a matter of time before I have a nasty virus and have to reformat, or pay Mcafee?????
