    HJThis Log of inherited computer

I have inherited a computer at my workplace and the previous user had put lots of software on it.

I have run Spybot and adaware and cleaned out some of the problems.
I ran a HijackThis log and theres stuff which I don't really have a clue about.
If some of the experts can take a look at it I would me most grateful...thanks in advance.

    Hello,Spotty & Welcome

Well not a lot here there are some items that i would say
is up to you if you want to use keep like Microsoft works????

first move HijackThis to a folder on C:\Drive like so C:\HJT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://g.msn.com.my/0SEENMY/SAOS01
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    O16 - DPF: {4ED9DDF0-7479-4BBE-9335-5A1EDB1D8A21} -

then close out of HijackThis & do this here

    click start->settings->control panel->internet options->programs tab->RESET WEB SETTINGS

That will change everything back to defaults (M$)......

Change your homepage and search engines to whatever you wish and reset your pc.

When it boots back up, open IE and see if the page stays the way that you set it.

    also do this here

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
    1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

& here are some tools you should download install keep them updated

SpywareBlaster - Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareGuard - An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware!
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

IE-SPYAD is a Registry file (IE-ADS.REG) that adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
    https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

and this prog here will help keep your PC clean.

popular programs for doing this, is a freeware program Called Crap Cleaner. Crap Cleaner is a single utility that lets you clear your Cookies, Internet Explorer History, Empty the Recycle Bin, Uninstall Programs, Clear Usage Tracks and much more. As well as this, it has an Advanced Registry Scanner. Using a program like this is one of the easiest methods.

You should also think about using Firefox & Mozilla & us IE for updates

Thanks HJThis for the prompt and comprehensive reply...brilliant!!!

I have done what you suggested and am in the process of getting the other bits of software.

One other small question - at the moment the computer runs Microsoft AntiSpyware beta 1.
Is this worth keeping? It didn't pick up a lot of stuff that Adaware and Spybot did.

I also use Sygate Personal Firewall...which seems to work OK.

    Thanks again

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
    Hi,Spotty

This is good news now as for Microsoft AntiSpyware beta 1
i say keep it, now i am one who hates Microsoft but the work
they did on this is great i just installed it my self & i have to
say they did one hell of a job with this prog 1 for Microsoft.

now with progs that do the same job i don't look at
so much at what one finds & the other did not do
i just keep them all updated & use all of them as
you just seen sometimes they all find things or don't

so like i just said as long as you keep them updated
use all of them now as for Sygate Personal Firewall
nice Firewall not hard on the user & i think this is the
one that you can add rules to Yes/No but again keep it updated
