Problems with Explorer crashing etc etc... (Resolved)

I have been having some problems with Internet Explorer recently... I have had to download firefox to overcome the problem!

But it seems that when you click a link, or even go to Start>Search>Find Files etc the window just seems to freeze and stick the CPU usage up to 100%!

I am assuming it is somekind of spyware on my pc, Adaware picked up something about a registry shell, and norton didn't provide anything!!

I have a HiJackThis log... Just to see if there are any offending entrys

You have the new variant of the Vundo infection.

Copy these instructions to notepad for use while in Safe Mode.

Please download Process Explorer by Sysinternals from here:

    http://www.sysinternals.com/files/procexpnt.zip

    Also download KillBox from here:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe

    Reboot in Safe Mode:
Tap F8 repeatedly when your machine starts to boot up.
Select 'Safe Mode' from the options that appear.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of utilmp3.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the utilmp3.dll's under winlogon click ok.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of utilmp3.dll then click the kill button. Click on the Threads tab at the top. Once you have done that click ok again.

Next, run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C044AAD-7955-4cbd-8175-501A165C4E5D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860} - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\utilmp3.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
    O16 - DPF: {39B0684F-D7BF-4743-B050-FDC3F48F7E3B} (FilePlanet Download Control Class) - http://www.fileplanet.com/fpdlmgr/c...DC_1_0_0_44.cab
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: req - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: utilmp3 - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\utilmp3.dll

Close ALL OPEN WINDOWS and click Fix Checked

Copy the bold text below to notepad.
Save it as fix.reg to your desktop.
Ensure the "Save as" type is set to "all files"

Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B8B5527 4-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEve nts]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEve nts.1]

    * Double click on killbox.exe
    * choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click OK
    * In Killbox - put a check next to "Delete on Reboot"
    * Copy & paste the following lines in bold one at a time into the "Full Path of File To Delete" box.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\utilmp3.dll

    * Then click the red button with the X after each.
    * It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

Once Killbox has rebooted your machine, please post a fresh HJT log.

    Ok done all of that....

just the two file paths you told me to delete in killbot i don't think existed, in HJT the dll files had changes to dat files!

    Good stuff.

The main baddy was the other one which you've killed. The req.dll has a habit of changing to req.dat and vica versa. This should be gone from your next posted log after the following.

Fix these entries with HJT making sure ALL OPEN WINDOWS are closed:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C044AAD-7955-4cbd-8175-501A165C4E5D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: req - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

Reboot into Safe Mode, open Killbox and do the same as before for the following filepath:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

If you get a message the file doesn't exist, enter C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll instead

Reboot back to normal mode and post a fresh log.

Not much joy with the last instructions i'm afraid!!

It still seems to be showing in HJT, and when using killbot, it sayd the .dat fille could not be deleted, and the .dll does not exist!
