Also, Eesh... I'm experiencing another problem that has something to do with the Spy-ware destroying programs... I posted this in another Forum because I wasn't sur eif it was right for here but I'll give it a go anyway, maybe you know what's up with it..
My computer was having some trouble a few weeks ago and I downloaded serveral spy-ware destroyers... (Hijack This, Spy-Bot, Adaware, Spy Doctor) And after running and ridding things that came up as spyware, I was strangely unable to view ANYTHING on Windows Media Player that involved internet connection. When I click on a download that should play in Media Player off a website, a message comes up saying:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occured. The server might not be avaiable. Verify that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct.
I went to the Network options and I think everything looks good.. But still, nothing plays on Media Player and I keep geting that same message...
Thanks so much!
Chelsea.

Hiya,
Close all browser windows, restart Hijack This and put a checkmark next to the following entries:
O16 - DPF: {87067F04-DE4C-4688-BC3C-4FCF39D609E7} - http://download.websearch.com/Dnl/T_50188/QDow_AS2.cab
Click Fix Checked
Could you try installing XP Service Pack 2 from Windows Update and see if this will sort out your IE error.
For your Windows Media Player error, go to this page and download the file that relates to your version and replace the file in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player.
-
Yeah, neither of the suggestions worked. I have a feeling that there's some sort of fire-wall that won't let me into hotmail, windows media player or AOL mail. It also won't allow me to make windows updates, when I tried it gave me "Error Number: 0x80072EFD" I went to the suggested way to fix it which is adding it to the trusted sites list on IE but that didn't fix the problem either. This is so frustrating.
-
Have you got a firewall installed? That error is the one I get when I don't allow Windows Update access to the internet through my firewall.
I think there is something on your system that is blocking the Windows Media Player Streams, Hotmail, AOL and Windows Update.
-
I think I might have figured out the problem. I think I deleted or SOMETHING happened this file:
C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc\
Which is a nessicary file. I figured this out because when i was trying to reconfigure the windows update site to actually update, a suggestion came up that asked me to open notepad, open file C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc\ and delete any host files in it. When I tried to open/search for the file, a window came up that said:
"C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc\ refers tpo a location that is unavailavle. It could be on a hard drive on this computerm or on a network. Check to make sure that the disc is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location"
Whaaaat? What disc? I am very confused. All I know is I'm assuming that C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc\ is a nessicary file and it might be the reason hwy I can't get into WME or my E-mail accounts.
-
It means that the file might be stored on a disc that isn't in the drive, don't worry, it isn't.
So only the C:\Winnt\System32\drivers\etc file has been deleted? That is probably the cause to your problems. Go to C:\Winnt\System32\drivers and see if the etc folder is there. If not, tell me and we'll deal with it.
-
Nope, C:\Winnt\System32\drivers is not there. I searched for the file and the same message came up about it possibly being stored on a disc or in a different location. I also typed it into the C:\ search bar and nothing came up.

I tried searching google for solutions, but nothing. any ideas?
