    Do the problems still remain?

Yes they still remain. One thing that I have not mentioned which may be of use ... the pages on one site open for a second or so before shutting down browser for both Firefox and Explorer. On MSN Hotmail both browsers had shut down after entering login details (Firefox now accessing MSN as indicated previously).

Did the problems start occuring after any system changes? e.g. installing new programs, etc?

Difficult to say as problem was first noticed when I tried to login to MSN Hotmail. I generally use Outlook Express to recover my mail but wanted to identify some mail as junk to MSN and tried to access my hotmail account directly. So problem may have been there but not seen.
However I discovered it in 4Q04. In 4Q04 I installed Spybot and AdAware after helping someone to recover there system from a severe spyware infestation and in so doing gathered an awareness of anti spyware software. No major problem was found in my system but I now regularly scan using Spybot and AdAware.
Also in that timeframe I installed BT Broadband modem and software.

Sorry about the response long response time. I really don't know what to suggest, I'll consult the other mods here and see if they have any ideas.

    Just a possible try:

If you don't have Automatic Updates ON go to Windows Updates & take all Critical Updates. Just today there was a cumulative update for SP2 as well as IE as well as the April Edition of Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (plus a few others: 6 total).

See if this helps or changes anything.

Andrewmoorcroft - it's a Dell PC but thanks for the suggestion

KenU - I see that you're running FreeMEM, a program which tries to recover unused RAM and make it available to the system again. It does this by swapping out files in the RAM that haven't been used for a while and puts them in the page file instead. The idea is that this then makes your system more responsive to new files that you want to load into memory. I used to run this on a number of PCs at the office but I removed it in the end after I found that it was causing more problems than it was helping with. As far as I recall, the problems were pretty random but they were cured after removing the utility. I'm not condemning FreeMEM as a bad bit of software but I'd recommend uninstalling it and rebooting and seeing if that then helps with your issues.
