    1. Download AboutBuster. Unzip it to c:\aboutbuster but don't run it yet we'll do that later on down in this list in SAFE MODE.
    2. Print out these instructions so you have them handy as some of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online. We need IE to remain closed throughout the process. With that in mind, read through the instructions and download all necessary files ahead of time. Opening IE may cause the fix to fail
    3. Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Open Windows Explorer & Go to "Tools" => "Folder Options". Click on the "View" tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types". Now click "Apply to all folders". Click "Apply" then "OK"
    4. Reboot to Safe Mode => How do I boot into safe mode?
    5. Next, go to Start => Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok. Scroll down and find the service called
      • Network Security Service

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.
    6. Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:
      • OpPrintServer.INI
    7. Run HijackThis and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked":
    8. Delete the following files if present (If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.):
      • C:\WINDOWS\OpPrintServer.INI
        C:\WINDOWS\ntgc.dll
        C:\WINDOWS\system32\addco32.exe
    9. Next, we will remove the offending service.
      1. Go to "Start" => "Run" and type in regedit and press "Enter".
      2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\O? ’ŽrtñåȲ$ .
      3. If O? ’ŽrtñåȲ$ exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.
      4. Now navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_O? ’ŽrtñåȲ$
      5. If LEGACY_O? ’ŽrtñåȲ$ exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.
      6. If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and click on the Permission menu option under Security or Edit. Then Uncheck "Allow inheritible permissions" and press copy. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.
    10. Browse to c:\aboutbusterand double click on aboutbuster.exe. When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.When finished, press the "Save log" button. I will want a copy of that log after all steps are completed here.
    11. Copy the contents of the Quote Box below (Listed after all steps) to Notepad. Name the file as fix.reg. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Save this file on the desktop
    12. Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.
    13. Run Ad-Aware with the latest update.
      1. Download the latest version of Ad-Aware (Ad-Aware SE Build 1.03) from here.
      2. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
      3. After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
      4. Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
      5. Once the definitions have been updated:
      6. Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
        • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
        • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
          • "Automatically save logfile"
          • Automatically quarrantine objects prior to removal"
          • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
          • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
        • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
        • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
        • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
        • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
        • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
        • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
        • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
        • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
        • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
        • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
        • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol) and select the following:
          • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
          • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
          • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
        • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
          • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
          • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
          • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
          • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
        • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
        • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
        • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
        • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
      7. Close all programs except ad-aware.
      8. Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
      9. Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
      10. After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
    14. Clean out temporary and temporary Internet files. Go to "Start" => "Run" and type in the box: "cleanmgr". Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press "ok" to remove:
      • Temporary Files
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • Recycle Bin
    15. Reboot to normal mode.
    16. NOTE: Two, possibly three files may have been deleted from your computer by the hijacker and may need to be replaced:
      • Control.exe. If control. exe is missing go to merijn and download the version of control.exe for your operating system. If you are running Windows 2000, copy it to c:\winnt\system32\. For Windows XP, copy it to c:\windows\system32\.
      • hosts (with no extension). Download the Hoster. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. Note: if you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself
      • SDHelper.dll (if you are using Spybot Search & Destroy). If you have Spybot S&D installed and SDHelper.dll is missing, replace it with this one. Copy the file to the folder containing your Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy)
    17. Additionally, Please check your ActiveX security settings. They may have been changed by this CWS variant to allow ALL ActiveX!! If they have been changed, reset your active x security settings in IE as recommended. In IE, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" and under the "Security" tab, click on "Custom Level" and make sure that the following settings are correct:
      • Download signed ActiveX controls (Prompt)
      • Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Disable)
      • Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe (Disable)
      • Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Enabled) (This actually refers to Java and Flash, not ActiveX)
      • Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting (Prompt)
    18. Do an online scan at TrendMicro's site. Let it remove any infected files found.
    19. Finally, when you are all done, please post the new HJT log and the AboutBuster log here for review.

I tried it, but it didn't go very well. The lines I was supposed to fix in Hijack This weren't there, Notepad wouldn't work, and Ad-aware wouldn't open. I must have also deleted something I shouldn't have, because my computer would not start again on reboot out of safe mode. So, I've had to reformat Windows. I was hoping to avoid that, because I've now lost many, many documents, digital pictures, and other files. But I'm assuming (and hoping) that will also erase any hijacking program?

Thank you so very much for taking the time to try and help me. You don't know how much I appreciate it. I wish I was more computer savvy and would have been able to do it correctly.

I hope you have a wonderful time on holiday!

You are correct. The hijacker should have gone now and you need some protection to prevent it returning. Have a read of this info:

    Preventing it returning

After your problem has been resolved on the forum, it is an absoulute MUST to do the following steps to prevent the problem returning. Click on the link to get access to the software or webpage that I'm referring to.

    1. Visit Windows Update
Pay a visit to Windows Update and scan for and download ALL Critical Updates and Service Packs. New updates are usually released monthly so check back to Windows Update every month.

    2. Download Antivirus Software-
If you haven't already got Antivirus software, you should download and install AVG Antivirus. It is freeware and is updated nearly every 2 days (sometimes more frequently if there are a lot of new viruses) and in my opinion, is better than some Antivirus software such as Norton. Antivirus software will prevent viruses infecting your system and it is important that you update it every two days or every week at the most.

    3. Download a Firewall-
If you haven't already got a firewall, it is Very important that you download one. Firewalls will prevent unauthorised access to your computer and stop data leaking out of your computer. You may think that it won't happen to you, but Hackers don't care who you are, what you do, where you live or what you had for tea last Sunday on your holiday in the Lake District, they want your data. Firewalls will keep these sneaks out and one of the best is Sygate Personal Firewall, which happens to be freeware.

    4. Spyware Scanners-
It is important that as well as having real time spyware protection, you have a spyware scanning application. If you have not already been told to download one earlier in this thread, it is a good idea to download Spybot Search And Destroy and Ad-aware. They are both spyware scanners and will search for a remove spyware. It is recommended that you have both, because one will pick up entries that the other misses. It is even a good idea to download these if you have other programs such as ASE, Spysweeper, Pest Patrol, etc, because one spyware scanner will not pick up everything. Please remember to update your spyware scanners weekly/fortnightly.

    5. Prevent Spyware slipping through Internet Explorer-
Quite a lot of spyware slips through Internet Explorer if your settings are not tight enough. Spyware Blaster will help you prevent spyware slipping through and installing tracking cookies. Simply run it via Start> Programs> Spyware Blaster and click Enable All Protection and it will protect you. It doesn't even have to be open! Remember to update weekly/fortnightly.

    6. Constant Spyware Protection-
It is important to have constant spyware protection. Spyware Guard works like an antivirus program but detects Spyware instead. It will constantly protect your system. Check for updates monthly.

All Of these steps are very important and it is HIGHLY recommended that you download all of the programs mentioned for your own safety. Remember to Update everything (including Windows using Windows Update)! It is also a good idea to perform weekly/fortnightly scans with Spybot S&D, Ad-aware and your antivirus software.

And last of all, please remember, that common sense is your greatest tool. Without it, spyware and other related Malware would rule!

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
i would opt for system restore or else..
uninstall I.E to base bersion probably then upgrade or else re-install whole I.E ..Opera & firefox are indeed good alternatives .
i would recommend that in future u do not use 2 antiviruses at the same time .whereas Programmes like Ad-aware/ad-ware / spyware are simply a nuesence . anyway good luck now that you have formatted it ...even i would be reluctant however u had no choice .
