Please help: Posted Hijack This log
Followed directions to run spybot and adaware se, then Hijack This. My log is below. Please help. Something keeps creating favorite links in my favorites... I delete them but they keep coming back. Also, random DLL's keep getting created in my Windows/System folder. AdAware notifies me of the attempts but when i delete the files, they just keep creating new ones.

7. Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.
8. Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.
9. Download SSS from here. Run the program and on the items to clear tab select both "Temporary Files" options and the "Recycle Bin" option. Then click Clear Selected Items.
10. Reboot to normal mode
11. Finally, pay a visit to Housecall. Scan for and remove any infected files found on your system.
Post a fresh HijackThis log and the AboutBuster report back here please.

Owen,
When I rebooted after following all of the steps in your message, I now have a bigger issue. My computer will not allow me to open IE at all (I get an hour glass for a couple of seconds, then it goes away and nothing happens. If I hit ctl-alt-del it says IE is not responding). It will also not allow me to open My Computer or any other folder for that matter. My cable internet modem indicates I'm connected but when I open Outlook I can not get my email. Also, I cannot open Control Panel or any other app via the start menu. I'm posting this message via my work computer since I can no longer get on teh internet at home.
Please advise. Thanks

Is it possible you could get me a new Hijack This log?
-
Now I can't even boot up my machine. I get the Windows 98 screen and then a black screen with a message in red: "NAV Auto-Protect... Unable to determine the location of the configuration files. [OK]" When I hit enter, the screen goes completely black with a blinking cursor.
I rebooted again and hit F8 to go to Safe Mode.... Safe Mode desktop appears with an Explorer message box: "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." Details indicate "Explorer has caused an invalid page fault in module explorer.exe at 0167:00401f31....."
Any idea what's going on here? Were basic files removed/cleaned causing me not to be able to boot up?

Owen,
I can't post a hijack this log since i can't even boot up my machine....
After reading other help sites, I have seen many other peope with this same issue. It looks like runing spybot has caused this NAV messgae box with "configuration files cannot be found" message to appear. Of all the instances i've read, i have not seen a solution to getting by this message and rebooting my machine. It would be nice to able to use my laptop again.
Please advise on what my options are here.... thanks.

Can you not boot up your machine at all?
Does Norton Antivirus perform a scan of the boot sector at startup? If so, I believe that some of the key files to run this scan have been deleted, therefore not allowing you to boot up your PC.
Can you get the exact message after the Windows 98 screen? Cheers.
-
No, I can't boot it up at all. After the win98 screen the message is exactly as stated above... "NAV Auto-Protect... Unable to determine the location of the configuration files. [OK]" I'm also assuming Norton is looking for files that are no longer present.
How can I get past this message and boot up my machine?
Thanks.

This issue is found on the web (http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfor...ssage.id=31138) as caused by Spybot S&D. It is rightly advised there to use Spybots undo function; you might need to boot into Safe Mode to do it. But I don't know if spykiller 2005 has a similar option. If not, I should advice to dump the program.
You might like to read through http://www.google.com/search?hl=nl&q...ation+files%22 (copy and paste the full link if it doesn't include the files%22 part) to see if any of the hits are more helpful in your situation. I've read already the advice to dump NAV.
If everything fails, I would advice to use MS-DOS withc cd support from a boot diskette to copy the NAV installation CD to the hard disk, then boot into Save Mode to reinstall NAV. That should work, although it's a little bit clumsy. Safe Mode, as far as I know, doesn't offer CD support, but I've never tried.
Hope this helps.
