Ran both adaware and spybot & both still said altnet was there. Adaware says it removes altnet, but it's there again when I run adaware again & spybot says it can't remove it because it still being used in memory...so...no luck yet.

Try running Spybot and Ad-aware in Safe Mode.

If that doesn't work, please tell me the exact location in the Registry both programs are detecting or the location of the files.

Ran safemode. Same prob. It's in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet. Found regedit and ran and there's a subdirectory Altnet\Dashboard too.

I make some recommendations about permissions in this thread. Try them and if they don't work, please post back.

Went into regedit in safe mode, found offending registry key, went into permissions, then advanced tab, selected my user, checked the replace owner box, pressed OK and got...

"Registry Editor could not set the owner on the key currently selected, or some of it's subkeys"

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Download the full trial version of Resplendent Registrar from here and install it to its own folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Respledent Registrar).
Click the Desktop Icon and open it, and create a registry backup.
Click on File > Backup and Restore.
In the Window that opens Choose 'Backup To Folder' and then backup your registry to that folder (e.g "My Documents")

    Boot into Safe Mode.

In the left hand panel navigate to and delete:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet

    Exit Resplendent Registrar.
