goes slower the longer it stays on
I have visited the "sticky's" , speeding up, cleaning up, installing and running spybot, ad aware, spyware blaster, spyware guard, disk defrag, and run crap cleaner. In my add/remove programs, it stops with an open blank window from the c drive when trying to remove "search assistant -- my web search", and the longer I leave the computer on, the slower it gets, even though the task manager says the cpu time is only around 8-20%. I have run all the spyware and adware removals and E trust EZ anti-virus, and here is the hijack this log.
what should I do next to clean this thing, and how do I speed it back up??
extra question:
why are there sometimes 4 or 5 svchost.exe processes running at the same time??
oh, and everytime I startup, the install wizard window pops up, trying to install something for office 2000, sometimes 6 or 7 times and I have to cancel them to make them go away, if I let it go, it looks at the cd, and then gives errors about components missing and install failed-- though office works fine.

There is nothing wrong with Svchost.exe, see here.
Close all browser windows, restart Hijack This and put a checkmark next to the following entries:

Click Fix Checked
Go to Start> Run and type regedit. Hit enter.
On the left Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall. Expand the uninstall key and scroll down till you find Search Assistant or My Web Search. When you do, right click them and select Delete. Confirm the deletion.
Reboot and post a fresh log.
-
ok, here's the fresh log.
It still had the "windows installer" window up trying to install something for office 2000. if you let it go, it asks for the disk, then if you click cancel, it posts this message:
"error 1706. no valid source code found for microsoft office 2000 sr-1 premium. the windows installer cannot continue". then you click ok, and it does the same thing 2 more times.
I noticed it loads in the system tray BEFORE the windows installer: graphics controller, networking icon, ez antivirus, and ebay toolbar, then after the windows installer stuff, it loads spyware guard.
and untill it's done with the windows installer, no matter what other programs you try to start, nothing happens until after the windows installer is done.

I can't see anything in there that could cause Office to load. Have you tried Uninstalling and then Reinstalling Office?
-
boy, that's a pain in the a$$-- done it before, not recently, but it takes forever, then I have to do the sr-1 update, then the sr-2, then the sr-3...
I noticed, however, when I double clicked the "spyware blaster" icon, it did the same thing. If I keep canceling it (3 times) then spyware blaster loads ok. I've noticed it before on other programs, but can't remember which. I'm guessing there's a registry key that makes that happen???
but if the only way is to uninstall, so be it....
any registry keys to search for??
thanks for the help so far, I really appreciate it...

Have you tried the trial version of RegSupreme in the Cleaning Up And Speeding Up thread. That should correct any serious errors in the registry.
Have you checked for updates at www.officeupdate.com?
-
yes, I have run the registry program, and speedup, cleanup, and have updated office as far as it will go.
I found if I uninstall spyware guard, it doesn't do the office install windows at start up anymore. things have been ok for a couple of weeks now, but last night I turned it on and it goes through the cmos checks and then flashes the message "invalid boot.ini file" and restarts.
I opened my sealed windows xp cd rom that came with the computer and tried to boot off that, but it won't work. I went into cmos and changed the order to boot from the floppy then the cdrom, then the hard drive, then lan, then other. still no help.
if I hit f8 it would go into the options screen with safe mode and directory restore and all those, but no matter which one I chose, it still does the same thing.
I have xp pro here at work, and I made an msdos start up floppy I am going to try tonight, I hope that gets me into the hard drive, but are there any suggestions??
can I make a new boot.ini file from the windows cd?

It will boot with the xp start up floppy, but it only sees the HP partition of the c drive (the small part with xp setup and cab files)(not the big part with all my files and windows and stuff) and the d drive won't show up (160 gig slave), and no cdrom support. If I use a win98 start up floppy, I can get cd rom support and when I run fdisk, it shows both partitions of the c drive, but says the 2nd partition is 100% full, which shouldn't be. It can also recognize the d drive, but says I can only set an active partition on drive 1.
oh, figured out the cd I have is just MS MONEY and MS works-- not the xp cd. I guess I don't have one of those, it's just on the 2nd partition of the c drive.
any suggestions??
thanks

This is turning into a system problem and is no longer my department. If you post in the forum related to your OS, you will receive better help.
