Hi bcbear, unfortunately APM isn't compatible with Win98 so we'll have to tackle it another way.

Before I can help you though, I need to see everything that's going on in your computer.

Click on Start> Run and type MSConfig in the 'Run' box. When the System Configuration Utility opens, click on the 'Startup Tab' and make sure there is a checkmark beside each entry. Ensure the 'General Tab' has the "normal startup" option checked. REBOOT when asked to by Windows to complete the change.

Then post a fresh log generated while in Normal Mode.

Can you please move HijackThis to it's own folder on your C:
(example: C:\HijackThis). The program makes important backups which can be accidently lost when running from it's current location. If anything goes wrong with your fix, you may need these backups to restore your machine to it's previous state.

To do this, go to My Computer (Windows key+e)
    Double click on C:
then right click and select New > Folder
Name it HijackThis and unzip/move your copy of HJT to it for future use.

Run HJT again and checkmark the boxes next to the following:-

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://c:\windows\TEMP\sp.dll/sp.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://c:\windows\TEMP\sp.dll/sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B80CECDB-6867-4714-BE98-2896B5C9F2A5} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BMKH.DLL
    O18 - Filter: text/html - {BD84DF74-1F75-4A51-AE4B-55ABBAD3260C} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BMKH.DLL
    O18 - Filter: text/plain - {BD84DF74-1F75-4A51-AE4B-55ABBAD3260C} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BMKH.DLL

Now close ALL windows & browsers and click FIX CHECKED

Download About:Buster from here and Killbox from here. We'll use them in a moment.

Set Windows to 'Show all files & folders' (Win98).
    Open My Computer.
Select the 'View' menu and click 'Folder Options'.
    Select the 'View' Tab.
In the 'Hidden files' section select 'Show all files'.
    Click OK.

    Reboot into Safe Mode.
Tap F8 repeatedly when your machine starts to boot up or hold down the CTRL key.
Select 'Safe Mode' from the options that appear.

Close ALL windows (very important step)
    Run AboutBuster
Click ok, then start, then OK.
When the scan has finished let it scan again.
It will produce a report which I need you to save and then copy and paste into your next reply.

    1. Unzip KillBox to a convenient location.
    2. Double-click on KillBox.exe.
    3. Click "Delete on Reboot"
    4. Paste this file into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box.

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BMKH.DLL

    5. Click the "Delete File" button (red circle with a white cross).
    6. Click "Yes" at the following prompts and Killbox should reboot your machine for you. If it doesn't, reboot it yourself.

Then post a fresh log along with the report from About Buster.

That's a clean log now Give it a few days and come back to me if the problems reappear.

Just fix these with HJT and uninstall the BroadJump software via Add/Remove programs. This came with your ISP software and beleive it or not, is used to monitor your internet activity so they can target you with adware applications.

I think it would also be a good idea to purge your System Restore incase you ever have to roll back your settings for some reason. There's a good chance you'd reinfect yourself if this happened.

    Click Start >
Right click on My Computer> Properties> System Restore
and tick the box that says 'Turn off System Restore'

    REBOOT, then go to
    Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore
and create a new Restore Point.

Now that you're clean, please take the time to read how to prevent infection in the future (not everything may apply). All the software recommendations below are tried and trusted programs which will greatly reduce your risk of further problems.

1.Visit Windows Update and download Service Pack 2 and ALL new
critical updates. You will have to make a few visits as your machine will require several reboots between downloads/installations. It is imperative that
you keep Windows and Internet Explorer updated with these patches so that
malware cannot take advantage of any security flaws in the operating system which regularly emerge.

    2. Install a quality 3rd party firewall such as Kerio Personal Firewall or Sygate Personal if you don't have one already. A firewall is your first and last line of defence,
giving you control over which programs to allow access to both your machine and the internet. If you already have Service Pack 2 installed (XP users only), you will need to switch the Windows firewall off via Start> Control Panel> Security Centre) after installing the new firewall or the two may conflict with each other. Other installation guidelines include disconnecting from the internet and temporarily disabling your anti virus protection to ensure a clean install. Don't forget to switch your AV back on before reconnecting to the internet!!.
Click here for a tutorial on how to use firewalls correctly.

    3. Install SpywareBlaster. This program wil protect you from bad ActiveX code from stealth installing on your computer if you accidently visit a malicious website. Once installed Check for updates once a fortnight.

    4. Install SpywareGuard to monitor any changes to your browser settings. This program offers a constant guard against spyware much like your ant virus software does for viri. Spywareguard alerts you if an installation of a spyware infected program is attempted.

    5. Install IE-SPYAD if using Internet Explorer.
This is a registry import file which adds over 7000 known sites and domains
associated with spyware, hijackers, advertisers and other malicious programs to your Internet Explorer 'Restricted Zone'.

    6. Consider using an alternative browser. Internet Explorer is used by the majority of the world's PC community. This makes it the number 1 target for malicious script writers. There are other far safer and secure browsers which offer better functionality such as Slimbrowser and Firefox.

    7. Use your own common sense and be careful what you download. Always read the license agreement for any program you're about to install unless you know for a fact it is safe. Spyware often comes bundled with legitimate programs and must be 'opted out' to prevent it from installing. Click here for a further tutorial on understanding spyware.

    Safe Surfing.

Ok, before we get started on this again, please confirm do the following:

    Download dll Compare

    1. Run dll Compare
    2. Click on "Locate.com" and allow the scan to complete.

    4. If the box at the bottom of the screen contains any files, these are the ones that are hidden - Click on "Make a Log of what was Found".
    5. When prompted to "View Log File" click on "Yes".

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SFCMAN32.DLL
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSJGB.DLL

If Killbox doesn't reboot your machine, exit out of the program and reboot yourself.

Then click on Start > Run and type cleanmgr into the run box.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin ONLY are checkmarked and click 'OK'.

Then post a fresh log along with the Startdreck log.
