cleaning up
I've been following some of the tips on Owen's Cleaning up guide - quick Q.
On the add/remove programs - I've got a few that I don't really know if I need or not I wonder if someone can tell me if I can get rid of them:
Madonion.com/3D Mark 2001SE
A lot of 'Windows 2000 Hotfix' with various KB numbers and
Windows balster worm remover tool
Windows media player Hotfix
I have been cleaning up the system recently and these seem to have appeared - can i get rid of them or are they important ongoing?
thanks
-
3D Mark 2001SE is a benchmark program...not really needed unless you are comparing against someone. The Hotfixes and Blaster Worm Remover tool keep. Those are you windows updates. You remove them, you remove the security that was installed to stop blaster and other potential exploits.

you could do worse than run a hijack this log and post it in the spyware forum for owen to have a look at
-
Cheers spud - here is my Hijack this log
Owen can you take a look reference my first question - i.e cleaning up any unneeded programs. You have looked at the actual log before and said it was clean - i'm just clearing things up now following your tips.
cheers

None of them you have mentioned there are needed. Apart from:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe /STARTUP
Thats related to AVG Control Center, if you don't have that running your not protected from viruses. Make sure you have checked up on each of them entries to see whether you need them. Some of them are down to preference.

I've just revisited this and I've attached a brand new hijack log. I did go to the cops website and check all the O4 entries. The only ones I decided to keep were AVG, itunes whihc it said i needed (dunno why) and i decided to leave the btyahoo as it did not make a comment on these at all.
so i checked the others and clicked fix, thinking they would go and it would speed up start up. as i mentioned on another post it didn't seem to get faster to me - maybe its because they are all on this latest log! (see below)
additionally is there anything else new you can suggest to remove or any problems with it. I guess i would also keep the spyware guard whihc i have installed since you saw the log.
thanks for your help.

That log looks fine to me. No major resource hogs apart from:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
You could fix these. It told you to keep them because the entries are automatically reinstated after your next iTunes run. If you have SpywareGuard installed, it should alert you of this and you can deny it.
-
cheers
I've done this again now. will see how it goes - i've left AVG and spyguard as the only O4s. I never got that warning before from Spywareguard - should it do this automatically?
thanks owen
