Can you please move HijackThis to it's own folder on your C: (example: C:\HijackThis). The program makes important backups which can be accidently lost when running from it's current location. If anything goes wrong with your fix, you may need these backups to restore your machine to it's previous state.

To do this, go to My Computer (Windows key+e)
Double click on C:
then right click and select New > Folder
Name it HijackThis and unzip/move your copy of HJT to it for future use.




Run HJT again and checkmark the boxes next to the following:-

Now close ALL windows & browsers and click FIX CHECKED





Reboot into Safe Mode.
Tap F8 repeatedly when your machine starts to boot up.
Select 'Safe Mode' from the options that appear.


Set Windows to 'Show all files & folders'.
Click Start > My Computer> Tools> Folder Options>
On the View tab make sure that you:-
Select 'Show Hidden Files & Folders'
Uncheck 'Hide file extensions for known file types'.
Uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files'.
Click OK.



Delete the following files in bold:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\1042\cwms.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system\javatask.exe



Open HijackThis again
Click on 'Config' (bottom right) > Misc Tools > Open Host Files Manager
Then click on 'Open in Notepad'
Delete everything inside apart from 127.0.0.1 Localhost
Then on the notepad menu click File > Save
Exit HijackThis.


Then click on Start > Run and type cleanmgr into the run box.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files Files and Recycle Bin ONLY are checkmarked and click 'OK'.



Reboot and post a fresh log in this thread.

Here is the new log...I was still unable to delete the javatask.exe file as you requested and was unable to locate the cwms.exe file.

Run HJT again and checkmark the boxes next to the following:-

Now close ALL windows & browsers and click FIX CHECKED



Download the free trial of Security Task Manager and install to it's own folder on your C:

When run, the program will list all running processes.

Scroll down the list and look for the following:


C:\WINDOWS\system\javatask.exe


If found, select 'Remove' from the menu above. It will then give you the option to stop the process and Quarantine the file to prevent it from reappearing on reboot. Select this option and then go to the 'Quarantine area of the program and select the option to permanently delete the bad file.

Now reboot the machine.

Run HijackThis again and post a fresh log.

Download ShootTheMessenger and disable Windows Messenger if you don't use it.

I also recommend you download and install these free progams to protect yourself in the future.


First of all you need a proper firewall. The SP2 firewall only blocks inbound traffic.
I recommend either Kerio Personal or Sygate.

Before installing a firewall, disconnect from the net, disable your Anti-Virus software and turn off the XP2 firewall, via Control Panel > Security Centre. Once installed, switch your AV back on.


SpywareBlaster
Protects against bad ActiveX and prevents Spyware being installed in the first place.
Check for updates once a fortnight.

SpywareGuard
Will alert you to any attempted change to your browser settings and acts like an
anti-virus program but for Spyware. It will also alert you if you download anything
untoward.

IE-SPYAD
Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.


* Keep your anti virus software updated and scan weekly with Spybot and Ad-Aware.
