connection problems, dial up slows to stop

Help, oh wise ones. I have had a fair number of malware in my time (even got stuck with a £70 phone bill because of a trojan dialer on time) but now i can't work out what's going on. When I connect using my BTOW (BT open woes!) the number of errors recorded as being received is significantly high (about 200 erros for every 200,000 bytes received) and within half an hour the connection slows to nothing (but doesn't disconnect) and whatever I'm downloading just stops. I've run Adaware SE, AVG, four or five virus hunters and other like programmes off the free disk of a magazine and they have identified the odd bad file but nothing signifcant (they all tell me that the computer is now clean) but it still doesn't work. Annoyingly I can't update a lot of the databases these programmes have (and can't get the new AVG because I can't get a coonection for long enough). Anyone got any ideas? I feel like rebooting the whole thing but for the 25 gigs of stuff on my hard drive I'd like to keep.
