I have just Googled you're Motherboard and it will take up to 16 GB DDR2 RAM

Part of that depends upon your operating system. If you have XP or either Vista or 7 32-bit then windows will be unable to use more than 4 gb of ram & sometimes it won't even recognize that much. You'll need to install vista or 7 64-bit to use any more. Frankly, for most people I don't see the need in having more than 2 or 3. You would really need to do a lot of heavy computing to consume more than 4 especially if you have 7. Use task manager to watch how much you use & if you don't usually get anywhere near the 4 gb that you have then you really won't be any better off with more.

@townsbg: I have used TaskManager, and after maxing out frequently and slowing down due to virtual memory swapping, I increased my 500MB to 2GB (the max I was told my Dell B110 can handle) — and now that doesn't happen AS OFTEN.
I work with spreadsheets and documents using some complicated (not very exotic) features of Excel & Word in Micro$oft's Office 2003 under XP Home SP3.
IFF I could shtup 4GB RAM in my machine, I think I would max out less often, but I would still manage to now and then. So I am not particularly surprised at the base question here.
[And I will try that "Google my motherboard"-thing, but I am not sure I know what to look for related to my CPU.]
    Peace — Chloe
