Although the operating system needs a restart from time to time I believe hardware actually runs more efficiently when powered on all the time rather than under the stress of contant power off/on.

Yeh, Powering on a computer is the worst thing there is
Big surge on the psu as everything sucks full power when you first switch on.
And since Server 03 and Linux can run long times without reboot, it's fine

Most commercial servers are massively redundant.

If one board goes it is backed up by another then the old board is replaced.

If you are talking about running your own server off a private PC that is a different issue.

Most small business' with only a single computer would not turn it off.

Many individuals also run the SETI and FOLDING programs that use your computer when you do not.

The ON/OFF issue for personal PC's is very opinionated.

For my part I turn off to save on the power bill. End of story for me.

Anyway commercial servers are designed to run 24/7 365/6.

No I do not run a server although I run XP 64 bit on my gaming computer which is a server operating system.

A 64 bit system allows for a lot of RAM and in many cases multiple CPU's.

A server is just a central computer that serves other computers.

On a small level you could set up your computer to host/server a computer game for example.

The data would be running off of your hardware and at the same time the players would haves access to that data.

As to a more specific definition of a server see this:

    server - Google Search

Do you have some specific idea as to running a server for something?
