    Red face Slow Laptop

Hi everyone. I am sure that many people keep asking you questions like the ones I am about to ask, but still I would need to get some straight answers abou the the following:

    1. I have this Toshiba Satellite L30 Laptop, which has been up to its job until the Windows Live Messenger - Beta version came up, I downloaded it and everytime I start the msn msgr up, it sort of takes over, plus it has that Today Window attached to it and it all takes for ever to load and be up and running. It also freezes quite often, as I am typing an instant message or trying to send a wink.

    2. Another thing is that apparently the system freezes, but when I open the Task Manager it says that every single progam is running. When I close it down it all gets back to normal

    3. Thirdly, for the time being could someone please tell me why the browsers or msoffice programs take so long to open? It's like the laptop is only able to perform a task one at a time - plus it is an agonising and frustrating wait

Could someone try and clarify any or, if I am not asking too much, all of these little annoying issues?

Thanks a bunch for any welcoming prospective solutions...

    Hugs, Tony

Well for a start, if the Beta version of Messenger is causing you hassle, you need to uninstall it and get back to a stable version.

Take a look at this article I wrote a while ago about Cleaning Up and Speeding Up your computer. This should help you to get your laptop up to speed.

Thanks a bunch for being readily available with a reply, which tells me that the solution has to be at hand. I will check all that out thouroughly rather sooner than later. Something also tells me that it's gonna be sorted in no time. I will keep you posted, Owen, as well as the remainder of the DAL Community. Nice one. Cool!! Hugz. Tony, London

Hi again, I took the liberty to post my hijackthis log, so that other options may be eventually available, before anything else. By doing this, at least I know that I will not get lost within the DAL Forum different sections. Thanks for your understanding.

Hi Tony, first I would recommend that you uninstall Windows Defender. Starting just about a year ago, I have encountered numerous machines, including my own (last January), that suffered from corrupted Windows Defender updates.

Next item: You did not completely uninstall Symantec/Norton software before installing Panda Internet Security 2008; you're still running Symantec LiveUpdate, which logs into Symantec servers for updates to programs you uninstalled and you still have one entry in your Hijack This log, [Firewal] C:\windows\system32\nortons.exe, that is worrisome in that, after googling it, it only shows up in Spanish language websites.

Question: Why are you running AdAware and Spybot after you purchased Spyware Doctor from PC Tools? AdAware and Spybot S&D are good FREE utilities, but you are utilizing unnecessary resources running two programs that remove applications that should be blocked by Spyware Doctor.

    Hope this helps.

    Doing it Dawggie style!

Hi there. Sorry for my belated reply, but have been unable to get on here.

I really appreciate your advice on here (Doing it Dawggie Style) , therefore here is what I have to say in these regards:

    1. Following your advice, I will uninstall Windows Defender then. Thanks for that!
    2. As for this Symantec/Norton software, I will remove it as well!
    3. Regarding the Spyware Doctor it was just a trial version and have already removed it from my System... What I kept was> Spybot S&D and Hickjack this.
    4. I will endeavour to completely remove Adware too, then. You are quite right, matie.

Again, thanks a bunch for that. Much appreciated indeed. Hugz. Tony

Further queries (sorry for being too much of a dummy in this respect, guys).....

Taking the opportunity and hoping that I am not troubling you, what Windows Live Messenger version should I get, as the Beta one keeps making the Hd run like there's no tomorrow and blocks everything else, not to mention the fact that it freezes more than it's desirable and takes for ever to stabilise a bit (around 80%). I got rid of many unused emoticons and quite a few of my downloaded winks, as I thought it was cluttered. Also, as for the yahoo messenger, every time that I log out, a pop-up window shows telling me of an error in running scripts on the page.

I removed both of the messengers from the start-up taskbar. The laptop boots up in a proper way and takes a lot less to be up and running. During the daytime, I log into the messengers by using the msn & yahoo messengers for the Web (from within the Internet Browsers - not ideal, but until I cannot sort out these messengers issues, it does the job to some extent, although they're quite limited obviously).

Finally, for the time being how can I successfully remove IE 7 and reinstall it, because every time I try to open it, it takes for ever to load, for starters, and it crashes every too often. Also, when I close it, it ALWAYS gives me an ERROR message and asks me whether I want to send the report, blah, blah. Mind that I have tried to uninstall it a few days ago, but then there is a message telling me of some applications which may not function well if I uninstall the IE 7. What am I supposed to do then?
I truly apologise for the lengthy explanations, but I also try to use my initial thread space so that I have it all in one place.

MUCH APPRECIATED FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ ALL THIS GUYS AND FOR YOUR SO USEFUL SOLUTIONS.
    Soon-Soon. Tony

Like jephree said, get yourself off to the security forum where they will analyse your log.

As for the messenger issue, I said earlier to get rid of the Beta and download the latest stable release from here.

As for the security programs, I don't really agree with the changes that have been made as they haven't really properly been explained, but once again, head off to security forum and they will give you the best information on how to proceed.
