Possible case of Hacking / IP Spoofing?

Now before you think that I gave my best friend my pass and he went in and destroyed things, and its all my fault for giving anyone my password yadda yadda yadda, consider this.

    hack·er 1 (hāk'ər) Pronunciation Key
    n. Informal

    1. One who is proficient at using or programming a computer; a computer buff.
    2. One who uses programming skills to gain illegal access to a computer network or file.
Now although they may NOT be hacking, they are definitely up to something and I really need your guys' help.

Today in school, I was pulled out of class by and brought down to the local Police Station. I had thought it was for knocking on some guys door last night that my brother and I know but dislike. I was in the interview room and the officer asked "What do you do on the internet?".

I'm sitting here like "wtf" so I say "chat, play games, homework..". The cop asks me what kind of chatting I do.

He asks me my email address's, if I use Facebook, what kinds of chat, etc. I'm confused as hell from this point.

He let me go, and had questioned both of my other brothers. Then they came up to my house and took away my family computer. Twat the *bleep*?

So it turns out that there are two girls in my town who are being harassed for naked pictures or a ransom of money, or they and their families will be killed. There are very serious charges for this and up to 10 years in prison. The cops had tracked it back to our house.

The thing I don't understand is that I thought they can only trace back to the IP Address and not any specific computer? He looked at some files on our Family computer and said "Yep this is the one" and got up and asked me to unhook it.

What I'd like to know, is if everyone in my household denies it, is there anyway that people can be framing us or something? I spoke to one of my internet genius friends here who claims that people can 'IP Spoof'.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that I'm using an unsecured wireless router, which I believe can be the other possibility. I have enabled the Log for it to see if anything else is connecting to it, and my friend even offered to build a logger that goes between the modem and router which tracks absolutely everything.

I'd really like to see some input on this. Because right now the cops have our family computer, and if the emails/threats continue they will confiscate my laptop. But if it still keeps going on, they will know something is up.

Another thing I'd like to say is between us 3 boys, we have made very powerful and smart enemies over the internet who I could totally see getting revenge on us.

What I'm asking if you is how possible is it that someone can be using our IP from a remote location or something to harass local girls? We're going through a lie detector soon and if that doesn't clear it up, then I guess we're calling Scooby and the Gang.

    [Edit]

I might also want to add that my last purchase of any protection was Norton Antivirus 2003. We only use Adaware and Spybot S&D for both computers, we have worse security then well, anything.

99.9% chance that someone near you was using your wireless connection to post the treats and your getting blamed for them. Bad thing is when you leave your wireless connection unsecured its not illegal for others to use it. I would try to tell the police that you had an unsecured connection and it could have been neighbors maybe they would look into that.

Also they could not track it back to your house unless the computer that actually did it was in your house only the IP address which then they find out who it belongs to.

    Ok sounds good.

I might also want to add in that our router is in our basement and has 1 antenna broken off.

So that probably reduces my frequency. I have a very smart computer friend who said his router goes a block both ways and his sucks, so mine should do the same. And also that the cops can only trace back to the IP address and not the actual computer, in which they immediately took the first computer they came across.

you ought to have security enabled on your wireless system what else have they been using your network for?

    downloading porn
    credit card fraud
    blackmail
pinching your documents from your PC.
    altering files on your PC
getting personal info about you and your friends/family

    This just in!!

My brother said that he had a conversation with someone on Xbox Live.

The had a name like l0olo1lol or something and sent him a message asking for his name, and why his computer is offline.

That is the last we heard from him.

The police, in general, are extremely thick as pig's doings when it comes to internet related crimes. They have little idea of what can be achieved and by whom. They are so naive they can only follow the 'obvious', which as we know isn't the 'only' possibility. They cannot conceive of anything else.

Get yourself a lawyer who understands Internet issues. Get one on the Green Form Scheme (Legal Aid) - unfortunately you won't be able to do so until they charge you - so do your research now and be prepared.

Alright I found some more **** out today.

Turns out I found out who the two girls were. Not the smartest girls around to be honest.

In my town, Im like the only kid age 14-17 with any decent knowledge of computers, so they right away blame me. Why? I dont know.

But the girs tell their parents and cops they "know" its me, without any other sort of proof or evidence other than our IP address.

So spending the whole day pondering what in the **** is going on, I thought of a reasonable explanation...

My brothers been steady on Halo since it first released. Having modded/cheated etc he's probably ran into A LOT of super nerds (same knowledge of Jephree :P ) and had screwed them over in many games. He is always releasing his IP address and facebook/msn to people he wants to cheat with. Maybe he ****ed them over and blocked them, I dont know.

But say he did make a powerful enemy. How hard is it for that guy to add us to facebook? Not hard at all. Ive been on Facebook for quite some time now. Random people adding me? Ya I accept every time, so does he. Turns out a lot of them are old time friends we haven't seen in years.

But maybe one of these random guys was the kid he spawn raped and lagged in Team Slayer. And maybe this guy is the 30 year old dude in his moms basement that has nothing better to do than cause trouble. So he adds my brother, and finds a few of his friends.

I heard from friends of these girls that the guy whos doing it made an account, added a bunch of people from our town, and deleted their account. I don't know too much about it.

But it could easily been us in their view right? Yes.

But just as easy could have been one person out of the 6.something billion people in the world. Cleverly planned, the guy got in contact with 2 girls from our town. Are they friends with each other? I dont really know. They are both fairly popular and can be associated with.

Im guessing this guy somehow deployed and used our IP and sent numerous emails to these girls. (I guess Email is really easy to spoof, MSN not so much, so Im interested to find out how much of this was on MSN.) After he ****ed with these girls, he had to take it to a legal matter and tone it up a notch, so he started sending threats of death to their families. This could involve the police, and these girls probably overreacted and called them.

Now the cops take a look at this, without to deep of investigation, and traces it back to our house.

    We get the blame.

But Im not to worried. Innocent until proven guilty? If they can't prove **** all, then there is no worrying, because there's nothing I've got to hide.

You dont know how much I want to get to the bottom of this.

    First off GET a lawyer!

I Hope they had a search warrant?

Also hope your ISP had a good reason to give out your info "question for lawyer"?

He asks me my email address's, if I use Facebook, what kinds of cha
Email obviously can be traced back to a person via smtp server and headers.
Sometimes you will find a header line which contains (HELO xxx) or
(EHLO xxx) where xxx is often the machine name allocated to the
    individual PC on a LAN

He looked at some files on our Family computer and said "Yep this is the one" and got up and asked me to unhook it.
Now if a pic was sitting there that one of the girls received thats not good !

Also IRC chat program logs can be traced to IP. So many possible ways trace traffic to IP. Maybe they just got lucky when they picked the right PC.

Now if your ISP put a packet sniffer your MAC address of the computer will be exposed.

To sum this up you need to get a lawyer and find out what they actually have as evidence. If you did do this as prank "not good".

They might be watching this thread hahahahahha

post back when you get updated !
