I use the one that comes with Windows!!! It works fine and the price is right.
One VERY IMPORTANT thing to remember BEFORE defragging with any defrag program - well, okay, 2 things:
1. You need free space on the hard drive for any defrag program to work properly. If you are defragging to free up space, it won't work. Defragging does not free up any significant amount of disk space. It only puts the file fragments together so the drive heads do not have to jump all over the place to load up or save a file. It also consolidates free space. Those actions may improve performance, depending on how badly the drive is fragmented - they also save wear and tear on the drive - but they don't free up any significant space, especially with NTFS formatted drives.
So if you are running out of disk space, see item 2, but also, go into Control Panel and uninstall programs you don't use.
2. Clean all the junk off your HD BEFORE defragging. It is senseless, and counterproductive to defrag with many 1000s of temporary Internet files, old logs, deleted items, and cache files on the drive. Use Windows Desktop cleanup and your browser's internal cleaning tools first, or use a good cleaning utility like CCleaner - a great disk cleaning program that is excellent at cleaning the system of unneeded files. During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar. Before first use, go to Options > Settings > Advanced and ensure Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours is unchecked. To delete all "tracking" cookies, (which I urge you do), you must delete all cookies, so ensure the Cookies setting remains checked. Ensure you know your site credentials (user name and password) for sites you frequent; you will have to login again at next visit. Another popular cleaner is ATF Cleaner.
Note: If you have more than one partition on your drive, or better yet, more than one hard drive, consider moving your Page File to the second partition/drive. Also, if you are running low on disk space, consider making your Page File fixed in size by setting the Initial and Maximum size to the same value. These steps will help minimize fragmentation issues on your critical boot drive. Whenever I set up a new PC or boot drive, I always partition off a small, 2 - 3 Gb partition on the drive for the exclusive use of the Page File. Then I never have to worry about the PF having enough space for itself, or that it may cause fragmentation problems as they sometimes do.
