    Vectors versus Bitmaps.

Can anyone explain in good simple English the difference between vectors and bitmaps, please?
I got the Open Office Draw program as part of the Oo suite, which is a bitmap program I believe, and I've downloaded an eval version of Mayura which is a vector prog. I printed out a simple curve figure I created with Mayura and I was amazed by the sharpness of the lines. Vectors are clearly the superior item, but why?

(BTW - Scarlett remains as lovely as ever, but Gina at http://www.pinupsforvets.com/ is giving her some serious competition!)
