they are verry similar, although i would go for the HP one. But i dont know what you want your pc for so i have listed some reasons for each make

    reasons for HP:
    -1gb ram (comparedd to 512)
-the hp's CPU is a 2.2GHz and the gateway is 2.4 (there is realy not much diference)
-hp is supposed to be a better make (so ive heard)

    reasons for Gateway:
-2.4 GHz cpu (verry slightly faster than the HP
-512mb RAM is good but 1gb is better (depends what you are going to use it for)
    -comes with TV tuner

I would choose the HP as well. PCI Express is the state of the art as of now.

The gateway has the fancy wireless keyboard & mouse plus the TV remote etc. but these could always be added to the HP.

The HP has a SATA hard drive where as the Gateway is using EIDE.

The Gateway has an AGP card but it is not identified.

The HP has a one year warranty compared to the Gateway 3 months.

I feel that HP is a more solid base.

That being said: have you considered building your own system?

it depends what you get, if you look for bargins on all the parts that the HP has in it (including the case, psu, motherboard sound card graphics card etc.) you can compare the price and if it is cheaper, you could build it yourself and mabe upgrade some parts.

EIDE & SATA are 2 types of hard drives & their connections.

EIDE is a fast version of the old school where as SATA is the newer format.

The current speeds are probably as comparable as those 2 CPU's however the SATA motherboard would have more upgrade potential. This also applies to the PCI Express! on that HP board. The HP motherboard is far superior.

If you do not have the desire to build your own then just buy a system.
Building your own would probably give you better components cheaper but it also takes work on your part. Trial and error. Interest. Desire to learn the mechanics.

If you want a box to plug & play then buy one made.

Make certain that you know how HP (for example) deals with XP Recovery. I prefer to have a full version CD of the Operating System for repair & reinstall but if you buy the XP with the computer (OEM) you are limited to the manufacturers' recovery options.
Some of these options require that you create backup disks when you first start your computer.
You just need to be aware of these issues.
