If you think the laptop is worth another $50 --> $99 then we can try and find the specific interface.

You just need to know SATA or ATA. If this is a really old laptop (5 years) I'd bet it is ATA but we need to verify.

awesome so i would just take out the one i have and install this one and would it make my computer run faster as well with this new harddrive or will it still pretty much be the same computer it was?

The physical speed would not change as they are all 5200RPM drives.

Of course if your current drive was failing it would have many issues including speed.

With a new drive and a fresh install of XP you should see a definite improvement.

Your "friend" might have sold it simply because the drive was dying whether or not he knew it.

Also I don't know the old size but 180GB would be nice and Newegg has them under $50.
