okay i fixed this , it may sound illegal but i dont think it is here is what i did :
i searched for my cd and it didnot work for some reason i think its broke
so i took my friend's css cd and installed it on my computer also installing the shortcut
then i unistalled everything from his cd and left only the shortcut
then i read the path and changed it for the css that i have from my own cd and it worked

is this illegal? i deleted everything from his cd

You can get Steam here but it is not your issue:

Steam is free but CSS would only be associated with it if you buy it from Steam and download it.

It has nothing to do with your retail copy CD.

If you cannot find an .exe in C/program files/ valve/counter strike source

I would suggest reinstalling it. Sorry

Opps didn't see all of those posts.

I had this problem once. all i did was made a shortcut from hl2.exe in css directory, then I put in an extension to the shortcut by right clicking and selecting properties. it looked something like "C:\Program Files\Counter-Strike Source\hl2.exe" -(extension goes here). It worked very well until i accidentally deleted the shortcut. now i forgot what the extension was and have absolutely no way of remembering it. it would be great if someone would remind me.
