I have played Half-Life 2 and completed it so when Half-Life 2: Episode 1 came out I decided to buy it; I pre-ordered it and pre-installed it. When the release day came, to my disappointment, the game didn’t work. Before starting the game, as I had read in the Steam news, there would be a notice before starting up to get the latest driver for your video card. I selected this and found out my video card version was a later version than the one that would be installed.

When I ran HL2: Ep1 it got past the ‘Valve’ short movie and when it got to the front loading screen it waited for about 15 seconds and then closes the program and showed the following message in an error box:

HALF -LIFE 2: hl2.exe – Application Error
The instruction at “0x0fbd3e2c” referenced memory at “0x0d94a1a0”. The memory could not be “read”.
