I see this post was quite a while ago. I just bought Act or War: Direct Action yesterday, got it to load once now everytime I try and start it it says actofwar.exe has a problem and has to be shut down and want me to send an error report to Microsoft.
I have d-loaded v.1.4 and 1.5 and run updates, re-booted after uninstalling and re-installing. replaced the existing EXE file w/ no cd crack to see if that would solve the problem but I can not get around that error and cannot get the game to load.
My wife just bought this computer last week (Dell 9100) so it isn't clogged w/ a bunch of junk..just yet anyhow...and I have been running Painkiller and Far Cry w/ all the eye candy turned on and it runs w/o a hickup, do you know of any solutions/possible causes???

more than likely its software related.. try uninstalling the game again, and make sure you reboot and there's nothing left of the game after you turn back on the pc... mainly delete and of the directory left from the game after uninstall.

when you reinstall the game make sure that you reboot after you reinstall.. log back on, and test the game without updating it.. if it doesnt work, try using the latest update only.. which i guess is 1.5
