No games work
Hi,
I've recently upgraded my computer from winME to XP professional, and now no games work - like neverwinter nights, legacy of kain, commandos 3, and myst IV! The screen is black with random colours flashing and graphic glitches. I've done a screenshot of what commandos looks like but can't paste in on here. I have directx, 256MB RAM, AMD Athlon processor, and Nvidia geforce 2 MX. On dxdiagnostics, it says in the device box on the display tab that the approx. total memory is 64.0 MB. I don't know whether i need to upgrade memory, or whether the geforce driver is compatible with directx 9.
Sorry if there's too much info here, but i need all the help i can get, thancks if anyone can help out.
CHRIS!!

Your system should be ok. It appears to just meet the minimum requirements of those games.
Do you have the latest nVidea driver?
If not it is here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_71.89.html
Hope this helps.

I've downloaded these drivers and the problems still occur, although opening videos are of better quality.

I don't know if it helps, but on the configurator for my commandos III game, it says total memory is 256MB RAM, then it says video memory is 64.0MB, do i have to get more video memory or is that an OK number to play good games. Thanx again for any more help i can get pleeasee!!! thanx CHRIS

That is an old card but meets the min req for most games. Newer cards have 128 or 256 but the only way to get that is with a new card.
Your RAM is completely different & 256 is the min for XP. 512 would be nice there.
But I am not sure if this is the basic problem. Were you able to play these games with ME on this same computer?
-
yeah, i was able to play them on the old OS.
Do you know of any good places to get cards from, and upgrade RAM-if that is the problem?

As to RAM this site will scan your machine & make recommendations:
http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/index.asp
As to cards:
http://www.ati.com/products/gamer.html
http://www.nvidia.com/page/product_reviews.html
Just to name two main manufacturers. Check the specs for the cards against those of your motherboard.
Hope this helps.
If those same games worked on the same machine with the only difference being going from ME to XP then the 256RAM might be the issue as XP uses alot more RAM than ME.
Also just a long shot (as those games seem to be XP compatible) but try to go to the Program Compatibility Wizard via All Programs Accessories
