Question Doom 3 and 9800 Graphics Problems !

I am having a problem........ I have a PowerColor Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, which runs like a dream on Joint Operations and Far Cry...... BUT when I start Doom 3, my screen goes all "out of joint", like a tv with really bad reception......... I put in my old Nvidia 5600 and it worked just fine, then reseated my 9800 and well, gee, it worked for about 5 minutes, actually started to play Doom, and it just "turned itself off", basically the game just vanished off my screen ! Any ideas ? any advice ? I am a bit confused, as it works like a dream with Far Cry and Joint Ops.............. please advise........

My pc specs are: P4 3.06, 1gb of RAM, XP Pro, and it's an Cube !

    Very confused !

try uninstalling your nvidia driver. and install up to date ati drivers, maybe even use catalyst 4.9? http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4547.html

Hi, thanks for the help ! I uninstalled both drivers, reinstalled, and again, Far Cry and Joint Ops - excellent ! but Doom goes horribly wrong. I am using 4.8, but I might try 4.9 if you think it's worth a go. At a guess, it's almost as if the game is starting on a setting that the card can't handle. I have a 19-inch monitor, which I run at 1600 x 1200 as a desktop resolution. I have tested the card on Far Cry and Joint Ops at 1600 x 1200 and it just struggles slightly, but doesn't go like a TV with bad reception. When I first started Doom, I thought it was part of the startup but then I found out the truth......... it's odd that when I put my old card back in, it was fine.... then reinserted my new card, and it was fine for about 5 mins, looked brilliant, then the game just "vanished" off my screen.............. I will try those new beta drivers tonight...... Will let you know how it goes ! Thanks again.......

Hi, I also had similar problems with my 9800 Pro and Doom 3, the damn thing would make my PC shut down without any notice!

I simply updated the catalyst drivers via Windows update to the latest version, then I turned my bus speed down to X4 and turned Fast write off (both by using the ATI settings panel - not BIOS). The game now runs sweet.

Also I find that by turning the shadows off I can run the game on high detail and at max resolution.

    Hope this helps.
