    ScanDisk not working properly

    Friends,

I have a problem with the ScanDisk program. Even in Safe Mode, the program does not work properly, instead repeating itself until a box comes up stating this obvious fact!

Obviously, without proper Scan Disk, I am not able to Defrag at all! This is causing a very sluggish computer, and nothing I've tried has done a bit of good.

Any advice and help you can offer will be most appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    ED

When you say it keeps repeating itself, do you mean that the progress bar starts moving across and then it starts again from the beginning and then moves across and then starts again?

If so, try stopping any other programs that you have running at the same time. This includes anything running in the system tray down by the clock (e.g. anti-virus background applications). You can normally right-click on system tray icons to get an Exit or Close option.

It would be worth giving this a try as I know that Safe Mode will help to start the PC without running some background applications but I'm not too sure whether it stops all of them.

Trouble is, I keep only a handful of icons in the tray. I did disable Norton, but I also have SpySweeper and Avast. And I'm not sure what else is running in the background, hence my dilemma.

As I found out, it doesn't stop them all since, under SM, ScanDisk still did not run correctly; something is definitely amiss.

Just ignoring the Scandisk issue for a moment, your main concern seems to be that you cant run Disk Defragmenter. Depending on where you run Disk Defragmenter from, there should be an option to run it without doing a Scandisk first every time.

Go to Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

There should be an Options button. In that screen, untick the option that says 'Check my disk for errors'.

There should also be an option to 'Use these options every time' - tick that as well.

Then click OK to run Disk Defragmenter and see what happens.

If that is all you wanted, then great If you do still want to run Scandisk, you can always run it from 'DOS'. When your PC boots up and it says 'Starting Windows ME' hit F8 to get some startup options. One of those will say 'Command prompt'. When you get to the command prompt, type CD \ and press Enter. Then type Scandisk /all and press Enter.

    Suitable solution ?
