Erm, I've just looked on my Windows 2000 system but I think my screen will look different to yours. But you could try it......

Click the Start Menu
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
Double-click 'Sounds and Multimedia' or whatever similar thing it says

Is there a 'Show volume on the taskbar' tick-box anywhere in there?
