Re: 98se locks up when booting and hides error message?
I'm not sure what I down loaded. How can I tell the right file that I will need?
-
The floppy disk should contain a file called Autoexec.bat and another file called Config.sys. If it doesn't, then it's not a proper boot disk and you probably need to double-click the EXE file that you downloaded (on your hard disk) in order to create the boot disk properly.
If that still doesn't make sense, download this file from HERE to a directory on your C: drive such as "My Documents". Then find it in Windows Explorer - it will be called Boot98.exe. Double-click the Boot98.exe file and it will ask you to insert a blank floppy disk onto which it will extract the necessary files to turn it into a working boot disk

How do I get the right download? How do I do it?

Download this file from HERE - CLICK ON THESE WORDS - to a directory on your C: drive such as "My Documents". Then find it in Windows Explorer - it will be called Boot98.exe. Double-click the Boot98.exe file and it will ask you to insert a blank floppy disk onto which it will extract the necessary files to turn it into a working boot disk.
If you've never downloaded a file from the Internet before and can't follow my instructions, then maybe someone you know could download it and create the disk for you?

HappyGoLucky,
Can you see my response dated 16th November? Where it says "CLICK ON THESE WORDS", click on those words!
It will ask you to open the file or save it. Click the 'Save' button. When it brings up the standard 'Save As' dialog box, click on the drop-down list at the top and click on 'My Documents'.
In the filename box at the bottom, check that it says 'Boot98.exe' - if it doesn't, delete whatever it says and type Boot98.exe. Click OK.
A progress bar will appear to show you how long the download should take and then you'll get a confirmation message within a few minutes to say it has finished.
Close all programs that you can see open on the screen. This will return you to the 'desktop' where you can see all the icons that appear when Windows starts up.
Double-click the 'My Documents' icon on the desktop.
Find a file called Boot98.exe or Boot98 and double-click it.
It will ask you to insert a blank floppy disk. Put a blank floppy disk into your floppy disk drive.
It will then give you a final instruction such as 'Press Enter to continue'. Do whatever it tells you to.
It will let you know when it's finished within a few minutes. Close the screen that's open. Remove the disk.
Restart the PC. As soon as the lights flash once on your keyboard, put the disk back in. It will now boot up from the floppy disk.
