    Win98SE system lockup

    Hi - I am using Win98SE with a P4-2.4GHz, 512MB RAM on an Abit IC7-G.

Recently, I have started getting a total system lockup when I view certain web pages with activeX or javascript. The web pages are OK, and have been looked at by plenty of other people. It doesn't happen every time, but still it happens 75% or so.

I used McAfee AntiVirus, which found a worm 'W32/Plexus.b@MM'

and removed it, but there may be some aditional damage done.

Is there any way to monitor why a system locks up ? I had hoped DrWatson would work, but it doesn't seem to cope with total lock-up.

Is there any way to find out what damage the worm did, and repair it ?

Download a copy of HiJack This, which is a diagnostics program, and then run it and post the log file as a reply to this message thread. Owen, our resident security expert, has posted details of how to do that HERE. That will allow us to see what is running on your PC and whether any registry keys are still affected.

Also, I've got a feeling that Norton Utilities or Norton SystemWorks has got some kind of crash-stopping application that tells you when your PC is trying to crash so that you can see what's going on. Maybe you can get a trial version or a full download from the author's web site at www.symantec.com ?

...... or you could wipe your PC and install Windows 2000 or XP, which will run much better on a PC that fast - Windows 98 was never designed to run as quick as your system ought to be.
