Personally, I'm with you, DJNafey, on Xp installs. Clean is really the only way to go, IMHO, as there can frequently be conflicts with existing software and indeed frequently with drivers.

I would say I have had 60% success rate with upgrades in comparison with 100% clean. Usually if it doesn't upgrade first time, it's clean install time, no second chances
