    User Profiles & Passwords

I am setting up a PC with Win98 for use by a school. I have got to grips with User Profiles and System Policies and I can now add users with access to some of the Control Panel functions restricted. When booting the PC it comes up with the user login screen which works fine if you enter the appropriate password for the approprite user.

However if you press "Cancel" at this login prompt the PC starts happily and you can access all functions on control panel etc. which is just what I was trying to avoid. How can "Cancel" be disabled or if pressed just return to the login screen?

Aha, you've discovered that Windows 98 actually has no security in it whatsoever!! The Windows Logon functionality of Windows 98 is merely so that different users can have different desktop wallpaper, screensavers, etc. There's no security there. For that, you need a network server and Client For Microsoft Networks as the primary logon.

Unless you can get a third-party utility off the Internet. You might want to take a look at http://www.annoyances.org as they've discussed the issue there.

Hmmmmmmmm, as I thought. Many thanks for the speedy (and, as always, accurate) information. I think Win 2000 looms! Thanks again.

If the systems have enough RAM, then Windows 98 to Windows 2000 is a nice upgrade. Apart from pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del to log in and having to find Windows Explorer in a different place on the Start Menu (unless you move it to where it used to be), the average user won't notice any difference. However, there are a few nice little tweaks to the interface that make it a bit smarter. And it's definitely more stable .... if there's enough memory

If you're not familiar with Windows 2000 and you want to check your system specs before you make the jump, just drop us a line in the Windows 2000 forum

Another thing to remember (as it has caught me out a couple of times before) - you'd think that kids would be happy with any old Pentium PC. But those multimedia applications and games that they keep loading on are actually quite demanding! And they take up quite a bit of disk space when they load a few of them on. I'm thinking of replacing my 7-year-old nephew's K6/2 450MHz Win98 system with a Pentium III Win2000 box as his old system is already struggling and I only built it for him a few months ago !!
