Unhappy Why won't my Win 2000 restart?

PC was given to me, running windows 2000 prof, ver5.0.2195, Processor-x86 family 6, model 5, stepping 2,
    Genuineintel~400 Mhz.

I havent a clue if anyone has been playing or not.

Will not re-start, or shut down from the start button. I had to reset the power button to turn off.

Please can anyone help a middle aged fool.

    THANKS.

A 400MHz PC will struggle with Windows 2000

How much memory is installed? You can see this by right-clicking the My Computer icon on the desktop, selecting Properties from the menu and seeing how much RAM is listed at the bottom of that screen. It's listed in kilobytes - if you divide it by 1024, that gives you the figure in megabytes.

The most common reason for Windows 2000 not shutting down is because there is an application or process running that it can't get to stop.

When you're about to shut down, are you closing all of your programs first?

What have you got running in the System Tray (the area in the bottom-right corner by the clock)? If you hover your mouse over those little icons, it should tell you what they are.

    Thanks for reply,
    RAM=65,008Kb / 1024 = 63.4844Mb

Bottem right cornner:- Unplug or eject hardware
    Volume
    DSL modem
    English (UK)
    WinZip Quick pick
    Digimax viewer v.2.0
    Bt Broadband
    Clock.

I hope this is the information you need. Whats next?

Looking forward to hearing from you. Gary.

Blimey - 400MHz PC with 64Mb RAM running Windows 2000. You're lucky it's even running - it must be very slow.

The problem could actually be linked to the low spec of this PC. You might find that it can't shut things down quick enough and something's getting stuck. A RAM upgrade to 256Mb would definitely improve the general performance.

Anyway, a diagnosis of your system tray:

Bottem right cornner:- Unplug or eject hardware - standard Windows icon - this is not a problem
Volume - standard Windows icon - this is not a problem
DSL modem - potentially a problem
English (UK) - standard Windows icon - this is not a problem
WinZip Quick pick - standard icon for Winzip 9.0 - very stable program and probably not the problem (unless it's an early beta test copy)
    Digimax viewer v.2.0 - potentially a problem
Bt Broadband - potentially a problem
Clock.- standard Windows icon - this is not a problem

Right-click on your icons for DSL modem, Digimax Viewer v2.0 and BT Broadband. Try to shut them with the exit / close / disconnect option if there is one. Then try to shut down your PC and see if it's any better.

Thanks for trying to help me, but every time i try something i seem to creat a whole host of other probs. TASK:- Check for new messages on "Mail.Freenet.co uk" STATUS:- Failed. CONNECTION:- BT Broadband.
ERRORS:- The connection to the server has failed. Account; "mail.Freenet.co.uk"; "Server;127.0.01"
Protocol; pop3, port;110, secure (SSL); No, Socket Error; 10061, Erroe Number; 0x800ccc0e
I realy don't know what to do.

Sorry we haven't replied to this sooner. I've read this a couple of times but been un-inspired with regards to coming up with an answer. I seem to be thinking more clearly this evening and was just about to respond when I saw that you've edited the post to say that it's already fixed!

    That's good

Did you find the solution to the specific problem or did you just get more memory?!

I spoke to the guy who's firm the PC came from, (he's also a systems engineer), and he agrees it's a memory prob. I am experiancing, (excuse spelling), other mem related probs.

Thanks for comeing back, and for all your patience and help.

    Gary signing off. ta ta.
