Win2k Pro: mouse problem
Hello, I'm running Windows 2000 pro and have been for quite some time. Out of the blue the mouse started behaving erratically (ie moving in odd directions and clicking on it's own) It was to the point that you couldn't even use the mouse at all.
I rebooted and the mouse just disappeared. I thought perhaps it was a virus so I updated and ran Norton AV... Adaware.... etc. It found nothing. Then I did a disk cleanup... and a defrag. The drive was horrendously fragmented. I did the defrag in safe mode... rebooted... and still no mouse. So I'm in the process of defragging again in regular mode. I don't have a good feeling that this will work either.
Any ideas or hints to bring back my mouse? It's a pain trying to navigate with just the keyboard.
HELP!!!!!!!
Thanks,
OhioMike

Is this an optical mouse or a ball mouse? If the latter click HERE HTH

Bear, it is a ball mouse. But the problem is that there is no cursor on the screen at all. It's like something was corrupted and now the mouse won't even load up at startup. Thanks for the cleaning tips though.

USB or PS2? If the latter disconnect it after shutting down the computer and check the pins & reconnect it and power up the computer and see what happens. Or try another mouse to rule out the one you are using now as the problem, just my 2 ¢

Okay, now I'm screwed. I tried swapping mice, no improvement on the situation. I went into control panel, system icon, device manager... then clicked on a device wizard to try to detect or reinstall my mouse.
I selected a generic PS/2 mouse and rebooted. The good news is that my cursor is back. The bad news is the mouse still doesn't work. The even worse news is now my keyboard doesn't work either.
So I boot up to the log in screen, but can neither type in the password or use the mouse to click anything.
I have officially pulled the rest of my hair out....
Any ideas? Please?!?

Try re-installing drivers from DOS. I did a mouse driver (Logitech) update from the net and lost my mouse and keyboard also. Find drivers from a machine just like yours and put them where they belong. Try going into bios and make sure mouse is enabled. Lastly make sure you don't have a virus or trojan on board.
