Display adapter gone, system restore not an option either
ok, the problem started when i got my new cell phone and it said i could plug it in as a removable disk to my comp. and add music to it (since it's also an mp3 player) well my comp. thought it was a modem and istalled it as that. as i uninstalled the 'modem' from the devise drivers list, somehow my display adapter got wiped out too (along with my sound driver but i got the driver for the sound back) it reverted back to a standard PCI graphic VGA card. now my resolution is stuck at 640x480 and 16 colors.
I've tried system restore after failing to find a display adapter that is compatable with my computer. only one problem with that: there seems to be no system restore option. I've used it before with no problems. I've tried start menu>programs>accessories>system tools-not in the list. Also tried start>run>msconfig>launch system restore...says "unable to launch system restore". Ok...so system restore is....gone? I also went to my computer>properties>performance>file system>troubleshooting> just to see if it was disabled but it's not. besides that if i could just fix the display adapter i wouldn't need system restore.
I've also tried to go into safe mode and went to display properties>settings>advanced>performance and moved the slider all the way back and restart windows (like someone else suggested, it should've prompted to update driver, not sure if that is right though)
I've tried to 'search for updated drivers' option in the device manager from my computer>properties. It just tries to reinstall the current standard VGA driver. I had a suggestion from someone to type in 'dxdiag' in start>run> but that just verified that i am in fact missing the display adapter and running the standard PCI graphics card VGA. here are the specs of my computer for help:
Windows ME
system board: acer laboratories inc. ali 1631 1.0
128 -bit AGP graphics accelerator
monitor: envision EN-510
Directx 8.1
If you need more info please ask, i'm starting to pull my hair out tring to fix this.

ok, i searched a bit around these forums and found someone who had the same problem. i downloaded and ran Everest home edition to find my 3d accelerator, it's NVIDIA RIVA TNT2.. is that the driver i need to install? i found it on driverguide.com and it says it's only good with windows 2000, i'm running windows ME. would it still work?
Edit: also, the whole reason for this problem, to get music to my cell phone's mp3 player, how do i fix it so it comes up as a removable disk? all it shows is the 'safely remove' option on the toolbar, no removable disk for it in my computer. I called and talked to tech support for the phone, they said it is a problem with my computer, the phone is compatible for windows ME. the removable drive comes up for other things such as my camera.

Welcome to techhelpforum.
system board: acer laboratories inc. ali 1631 1.0
The above is most likely just the chipset on your motherboard.
First, if this motherboard is in a proprietary system (Brand-Name, ie; ACER, IBM, Dell, Gateway, Hewlett Packard, etc, etc), which came "pre-loaded with ME from the factory", and you are using onboard display, you should go to the manufacturers site to obtain the drivers for it. You should always use the manufacturers driver packages whenever possible. They sometimes contain elements which are particular to the machine level hardware/bios. (ie; a certain motherboard with certain tailored onboard sound/display chips, and a tailored bios for those chips etc.)
If this is the case, and you need assistance finding the drivers for it, post the exact make and model number of the system and I can find the drivers for you.
If it did not come "pre-loaded with ME from the factory", and you've installed ME yourself, or the display adapter is a seperate add-on card in a motherboard slot (AGP/PCI), then try this display driver; (10.7 MB download)
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_71.84.html
Ensure you read the "Driver Installation Hints" under the Additional Info link at the left of the page before you download or install these drivers. (Nvidia is quirky.)
The above is the latest driver. There are also Archived drivers for 9x/ME in case this version causes problems. (In rare cases, latest is not always best.)
