intenet and email not working
We have 2 computers connected to each other through a router, which is connected to the modem
One computer is Windows XP
The second computer is Windows 98
The internet and email was working fine on both computers until last week. The only thing that happened was, we had a bad storm, (but the computers were off) and Norton Antivirus was updated on the computer with Windows XP
The Internet and Email work fine on the Windows XP
The printer connected to the router works fine
My husbands laptop that he occasionally uses, plugged into the router works fine.
My computer (windows 98) won’t get internet or email, even if I plug it directly into the modem.
So… the modem is fine, the router is fine, the internet service provider (Comcast) is working fine
When I click on Internet Explorer this message along the bottom of the screen keeps flashing very quickly
“opening page http//dev-search.accoona.com/search.jsp?QT=H.accoona.com/se”
I have no idea what that is, my home page is Yahoo
If I try to change my home page to accoona.com it still won’t work
The email says: the host mail.comcast.net could not be found. Protocol POP3 Port 995
Microsoft won’t support windows 98 anymore; someone at Comcast said it sounds like a winsock error
Help!!

Hello, and Welcome to techhelpforum.
Sorry this thread slipped by me.
Acoona.com is a search engine, similar to Google.com.
"When I click on Internet Explorer this message along the bottom of the screen keeps flashing very quickly
“opening page http//dev-search.accoona.com/search.jsp?QT=H.accoona.com/se”
If clicking on Internet Explorer triggers this address, somehow something has changed your Home Page setting.
Can you set it back to Yahoo? Will it "stick" (stay set as Yahoo) if you can change it back?
Other preliminary checks;
Internet Connections - Is everything still set up properly?
Are the lights (if present) on your LAN card in the 98 machine lit?
Is the LAN cable from the LAN card to the router secure?
LAN parameters - Is everything still set up properly? (ie; IP address for the 98 machine/router etc)
Have you tried reinstalling the LAN card drivers?
Have you tried to repair IE? (Start, Run, sysinfo32. Click on Tools, then Repair Internet Explorer.)
If you are using 98FE, see if this applies;

Re; Mail:
Are Protocol POP3 and Port 995 the correct settings as per your ISP?
Researching the "winsock" element........
