Windows 98se poor picture and colour quality.

Hi, I am looking for a bit of help please with a problem on Windows 98se. WE REPLACED THIE OLD PC WITH 98se on it with a newer PC running XP, but that has crashed, so this is our only 'back up' at the moment. Before we replaced this PC, one of the children somehow managed to 'fiddle' and made the colours and picture quality go very poor. The colour appears to be lacking depth and the pictures (on photo's, adverts, the internet, in fact everything) seem to me like the 'dots' that make them up are far to big, si that no detail can be seen. I have gone into Control panel and then display, and settings, and the 'screen area' is set at 'low' (640 x 480). It will not let me adjust the settings at all though, it appears to be stuck in the low position what ever I try to do. I have a feeling that this may be the problem, but need to know if there is another way around this, or if I am doing something wrong please.

I have tried two different monitors, and two complete pc's, just in case it was something to do with the hardware, but it seems to me like it is a problem in the actual Windows itself. Please help if you can,

    Thanks very much,

    John.

    Hello, and Welcome to techhelpforum.

It sounds as though your display adapter drivers have been either corrupted, replaced, or deleted.

Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under

    (Display)
Computer, Summary, Display, or under Display, PCI/AGP Video. This will tell you what display adapter/chip you have. Post that information. (Video Adapter and 3D Accelerator.)

    Hi Dan,

Thanks very much for your help.

The video adaptor is; Standard PCI Graphics Adaptor (VGA) 64m,

The 3D Accelerator is; Intel i752.

    Thanks again,

    John.

    The win9xe67.exe package should do the trick;

    http://members.driverguide.com/drive...riverid=196263

(4+ MB file. You will have to "register" with DriverGuide, but it's free, no nags, and it's worth it if you need drivers again in the future.) Just click on the file name and choose "Download this file by signing up for your free account".

However, prior to running it, verify that your chipset is intel 810, 815, or 820 based. Look in Everest under Computer, Summary. In the right hand pane look under Motherboard. The Motherboard Chipset should be listed. Please post that information as it's possible that running the entire intel chipset utility (for your motherboard) may be better than just this display element.

I have this file saved from long ago, so if you have any problems obtaining it, let me know and I can attach it or upload it to my webspace for you to download from there.

    Post back with your results.
