I don't know if I'm the "Dan" you're addressing, but I'll venture some input towards your problem resolution.

First of all, try disengaging your Caps Lock key. All capitals make for harder reading, and is considered as "shouting" in forums, "webspeak", etc.

Was there more to the error message?
Such as: "While initializing device vkd -- Windows Protection Error -- You need to restart your computer"

There's a MSKB article ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187212/en-us ) which illustrates solely that message, but it pertains to Toshiba computers.

Have a look here and see if anything pertains to your machine.

hi dan, sorry to shout at you b4,the only words are- windows protection error please restart you computer. when i do it starts in safe mode, it asks you to fix the problem in the control panel, no probs, but i dont no what the problem is, had a look around seen things about the L1-L2 disable, thats on, half way into the set-up it asks im i using a pc card ? i did load 98se yesterday and thought great, loaded my internet server and of i went, 30 secs into internet action the thing just switch off restarted and then the dreaded wpe.is it that 98se is to large ? and the machine should be loaded with 95? thanks dan for you help. bk

Does the machine still shut down/restart with the WPE while in Safe Mode?

Does the shut down/restart with the WPE only occur while you're connected to the internet?

Do you run Norton Anti-Virus?

It looks daunting but it's not that bad. Have a look and see if anything pertains to your machine and post back with your results.
