I have been using WINDOWS 2000 PRO, since 4 year. unfortunately, my 2000 Pro CD got demaged, it has got two pointed nicks at 1/2" from Outer Dia and standby CD (copied from Original CD),it is not recognised. I tried rerun the CD, so that system may repair or reload the missing folders, but it gets struck at 26% level. When I use demaged original CD, Compu readsit upto 26% and then displays the message, insert the CD & enter. Instead, when I insert Standby CD, CD Rom drive indicator LED does not blink and messag does not change. HDD is working fine. My laptop with WIN-XP can read the Standby CD.

1. How to get it work?

2. Can I copy my tax files by Laptop CD-rom drive by using USB ports on desktop and Laptop? and how?

3. If not, can I use friends Desktop with WINXp to do the same by making the HDD as slave drive?

Sorry for the delayed response but the most expedient method for file recovery would be to slave the drive.

Do you need further instructions on this process?

Thank you very much. I was able to make the HDD as slave and could see list of files, using friends desktop XP. The friend did not have much time for me to open reqd. tax file, so I saved it on flash Mem stick. I tried to open it in tax cut in my LaptopXP. It didnot succeed.

Please guide me

Could you access the files from the Mem stick by just right clicking it under My Computer and choosing Open or Explore?

As to the hard drive you can get an USB external case and then connect it to your laptop.

3 . I have 4 bootdisks and 1 emergency repair disk (prepared at the time of first installation of Win2000 Pro. I tried to reboot with these. But finally it also asks for CD and demaged cd or backup copy does not work. Any way out. Win2000 is obsolete now, are there used software sellers?
