Hello, and Welcome to techhelpforum.
Open Device Manager. (R-click My Computer, click Properties, click Device Manager.) Is the DVD listed there?
If not, open Control Panel. Click Add New Hardware. Does Windows find the drive?

I believe I may have found the problem. I tried another dvd drive and it seems to be alright. I still have to try the bad dvd in anther computer to see what happens.
Thank you for the reply

It seems as though you're on your way to a resolve.
One way to check to see if the problem is hardware or software related (would have been my next step based upon your response) is to boot with a Win98SE Boot Disk, choosing with CDROM support, and doing a dir listing of a factory data CD (98 CD does nicely) to see if you get a listing of the CD. If you do, the problem is software (O/S) related.

I have left the cd in as this is all the guy needs.
Seems to be working fine now.
