I was thinking about upgrading to XP but at the moment my OS is 98SE is it possible to just overwrite this and keep everything else the same, or do I have to wipe everything on my computer?

The first thing you need to do is put your computer through the XP Readiness Test this will tell you of any possible hardware or software problems before you do the upgrade or a clean install.
