    i hate my pc

    My dilemma…
My o/s is Windows '98. Should have Internet Explorer 6 but using IE5. Cable Modem.
Problem…Some how managed to get IE5 instead of IE6, links in pages don't open, message on bottom right corner says "error on page" or "found site waiting for reply" and never opens. I try to update my AVG, Zonealarm, Ad-ware, and Windows and because they are links to other sites they won't open and can't be updated. I have tried to update my IE5 to IE6 and can't, the links just don't open.
Outlook Express 6 isn't working-"MSIMN is having a problem and will shut down". And it shuts down. I can receive email, but can't open the mail, can't send mail, or forward to another account to read.
Even my MSN's MY Space tells me to update my IE5 to IE6 to benefit from great new additions (which I've already had and used and wondered what happened to it). Rich text editor is gone along with other neat features from my space that I once had.
I have defragged, scanned, used the ad-ware, antivirus, spybot and everything comes back fine. Re-loaded Office '97(which I've had from day 1)
How do I go about resolving this issue…I'm going nuts!

That is an interesting problem. Have you tried copy pasting links as opposed to just clicking on them? so that possibly you could dl IE 6? or do you have another pc or a friends pc to download IE6 on?

Hopefully we can help you out here.

    To repair Internet Explorer 5:

Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
    Launch Add / Remove Programs
Go to Install / Uninstall tab
Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools
    Click Add / Remove
Click the Repair Internet Explorer option
    Click OK

    For Windows 98 Second Edition:

The IE Repair tool is not present in Add / Remove Programs (Control Panel) and is only available in the Uninstall Dialogue Box. Gazette Reader Michael W. sent me this information about accessing the IE Repair feature for Windows 98 SE:

Click Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information
Click Tools (tool bar) -> Internet Explorer Repair Tool
Alternatively, you may follow the instructions for IE5.01 (below).

    To repair Internet Explorer 5.01:

    Click Start -> Run
    Type: msinfo32.exe
    Click OK
    Msinfo32.exe tools will open
Click Tools (tool bar) -> Internet Explorer Repair Tool

IE6 was designed for XP. use Win98SE with IE 5.5/SP2

To Restore to the Previous Version, go to:
    Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information.
Click on "Tools" at the top, then click on "Internet Explorer Repair Tool".
Click on "Restore the previous windows configuration".
Then click on "Advanced", and put a check mark by Outlook, to also restore it. (this will not delete any Outlook folders like Inbox, etc.)
This will restore IE to the previous version; for example, like IE 5.0.
    This takes about 5 minutes.

    neither of your suggestions worked.
I have no promt that says "repair internet tools"
    I'm so frustrated.
I have no '98 disk and I'm going to see if I can borrow one from someone.

Thanks agian for your help at this time...I appreciate it!!!
