Red face Windows 98 and no modem detected

Hope there is help for me!! I have old PC that runs Windows 98 (SE--I THINK!!) and it will only start in safe mode WHEN it finally starts! (It isn't here at my home so I can't offer much info yet....) Can NOT get online because it says it can't read any modem connection...my modem is connected to Port 2 but I see no Port 2 on the list when I look--only Port 1 (two of them) and Port 3....I can't do much in safe mode, so I am at a loss....I also can't get the CD drive to read any disks and of course I can't find my 98 installation CD yet....but I tried a floppy 98 set up and it won't work in safe mode. ANY suggestions???
    Thanks!!
    Kathy

Welcome to the forum Kathy!

Do you know the manufacturer or the model number of the modem? If you don't, is it possible to get it at all?

Hi and Thanks for the welcome!! I have looked for the booklets on this old PC..NO LUCK...I can get the info when I get "back out to the farm" possibly tomorrow...I do have the SystemBoard booklet and cd here with me....would this be of any help with my problem of the modem not being detected?

Well what I was thinking what the problem was is the drivers. Which means you would need to redownload them from the Internet as your CD drive ain't working (you can open another new thread if you want to try and fix that ), but that means we need a manufacturer and/or model number.

Haven't gotten manufacturer/model yet BUT I just remembered I had installed new printer on this PC and when it wouldn't work right, I went into the printers folder and guess what??...I deleted a folder I "thought" was left from the old printer...seems I was wrong  (who'da thought Brother models were HP???) SO now that I can't get my CD drive to work - I can't install that printer again-GASP!! (Your mention of driver made me think of the bad thing I did....) I do have another PC for him to use..guess that will work until I get info and get MUCH NEEDED help from you all!!
    Bear with me.....and THANKS!!

    HI,

Go into the Start, Control Panel, Systems, Hardware, Device manager area and delete all references to a modem.

Shut down, take the modem out of the computer and put that modem in PCI #3 (third slot down from AGP graphics slot.

Then start up and go into (most use DEL key to enter BIOS) the BIOS setup menu and make sure for Win98, that the Plug N Play (PNP) option is set to Enabled or Yes, whichever is listed. Be sure you save before you exit if you made any changes.

Boot it up and see what happens.
