Software & Updates for 98
Hi
I have recently started using my old windows 98 based PC again as my usual XP & Vista one is off for repairs.
As I had not used the old PC in ages I formatted the the hard drive and did a clean install.
So far so good. What I forgot to do was check that I could still use a firewall, anti virus, anti spyware that is still supported for 98. Also as you all know, Microsoft has stopped updating 98.
I did find Avast! anti virus (free edition) which works just fine and spybot works just as it always has. Also I managed to get hold of a file containing all the Microsoft's final updates at this location,
98 SE Service Pack
These updates dont include IE6 or Media Player 9, but you can still get those from Microsoft.
But I am still looking for a free supported firewall, a program like adaware, a browser and an email client. Also if anyone is still creating unoffical updates for 98, that would be useful too. Also just remembered about Adobe flash and shockwave players. The latest versions dont work with IE6, could they work with another browser?
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for any advice beforehand.

Hi Broni
Thanks very much for your advice. I had heard of people using FF3 on 98 but any attempts I made wouldnt work. Version 2 I guess will do.

Another update on getting 98 into a useable state.
Downloaded the latest version of the Opera Browser and it works much better than IE6.
Its available here
Opera Web Browser | Faster & safer | Download the new Internet browsers free
The only thing is it keeps asking for the Msimg32.dill from Windows ME as the version 98SE has is too old.
I did manage to download it from here
Download msimg32.dll at www.dll-downloads.com
However when I try to replace it in the Windows/system directory; I cant because the dll is already in use. Anyone got any advice for this one or should I just leave it alone?

Try to replace it in Safe Mode.

Thanks Broni
I will give that a try. Apparently Opera needs the newer dll for effects like fading on web pages. It would be nice to have the browser fully functional, but even as it is, its more reliable than IE6.
