ok. Some questions just to clarify what is going on:

1: You tried to reinstall Windows 2000 on this Compaq.

Did you use the Compaq Recovery CD? Or what?

2: It didn't work. What exactly happened?

Please tell us as much detail as possible.

3: You did something with the external drive.

    What exactly?

4: What are you trying to boot?

You're not trying to boot the external drive are you?

Anyway a few more details might help us help.

External drive is a external CD/RW not a hard drive. Sorry about that. Trying to boot? From win install disk!

OK i try to run installation it ask if i wanted to a clean install I clicked NO! it ran for about ten min.
then a message saying that it couldn't find some files so it stopped and tryed to reboot!

Error message (make sure SCSI devices are properly terminated see computer scsi adapter documentation),
(setup failed to install the product catalog)

And one about AVIRA was blocking something so i went in at the c prompt and removed the program avira, this has been on going about two weeks it's hard to remember all the error message. I have a older version of win2000pro v5. ? And the one on computer is a higher version 5.0.2195 the computer said it was a newer version couldn't install if I take it all off can I install the older version? or what do you think?

Is the CD the original one from Compaq or a different CD?

Do you know the Product Key associated with this computer?

    Why not a Clean Install?

You should be able to "wipe" the hard drive and install from scratch assuming the following:

You get your drivers from Compaq and you know your Product Key.

Can you pick out your exact model from this list:

    Product search results

No this is a copy ,
    I don't know the key

I didn't under stand how or about a clean install all I wanted was to put some missing files like,Defrag,Disk Cleanup back on the PC.

I Have the key from the PC.

I have a copy of W2000Pro v5. it has 7 disk, No key

I all so have a copy of WinXP and i have the original disk and key for this one, can we do anything with this Disk?

The Product Key is tied to the computer and not the CD. The CD's are all the same as long as the version matches..

If you want to try and Repair Win2K you should be able to run a Repair or Upgrade install but only if you have a CD which is the same version as is currently installed.

If you want to "wipe" the computer and install XP you can do that as well. The key is tied to one computer so this XP key cannot be in use on another computer.

If you could specify your Compaq model from my above post it would help me look up original data as well as drivers for your computer.

There must be a label on the side or the rear of the case with the system model and or product #.
