    windows 98se startup problem

I have just installed a new lan card on my girlfriends windows 98SE pc. Since the install (which works fine) I come across the following errors on startup - they can be skipped but are quite annoying. If anyone knows how to get round the problems I would be most gratefull. The startup errors are listed below:

    1. Missing file : vredir.vxd

    followed by

    2. Grey box - windows networking - Unable to load dynaminc link library : msnp32.d11

When you get a VXD error like Vredir.vxd following a change to your networking configuration in Windows 98 / 98SE, the best thing to do, in my experience, is to remove all of the networking components. Reboot your PC and you'll probably find that it doesn't have the error any more because, in removing the networking files, Windows replaces some other bits n pieces.

Once you've got a PC that is error free, re-install the networking components again and, hey presto, problem solved.

Note that you may need to actually take the network card out of the PC if it keeps re-detecting it before it sorts the problem out.

Alternatively, try this as it may be quicker and easier:
    1. Go to the Start Menu > Run prompt.
    2. Type SFC and hit OK
    3. When System File Checker starts, choose the option to extract a file.
    4. Specify that you want to extract vredir.vxd.
You'll need the Win98SE CD or the original CAB files on the hard disk. Reboot after it's finished (only takes a minute).

Let us know if that sorts it.

    I have the same problem.

    I followed your advice:

    start
    run
    type sfc
system file checker box choose extract file
    type vredir.vxd

at this point a box comes up and ask 2 questions:
    restore from: ???
    save file in: ???

My question is what should I put in these boxes?

    Thanks
